Operation Christmas Child – This is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about giving. Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 100 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts. But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present. They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ. Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world. In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ. Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity. We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the name of Jesus Christ for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect. Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The boxes are due on November 10th.

Reading – We continue to work on comprehension.  There is so much language processing involved in this activity. As the children move up in the grades, this skill is so very important. Continue to read and study vocabulary that is assigned. Studying vocabulary is critical to making good progress and some groups are struggling with this. About 5-10 minutes an evening will make a big difference, realizing some who struggle with visual memory might need to spend a little more time. These words are all in the stories so there is plenty of text practice with these words. Just studying the words in isolation will not put it into long term memory which is our goal.We will be  using more and more of our phonics skills to decode unknown text. We will also start incorporating our leveled readers along side our anthology. The leveled readers give lots of practice applying skills to words that have not been learned as vocabulary words.  There will also be more words using the ed and ing ending.

Writing – In the 2nd quarter we will be writing about an expository place,  incorporating all the elements of a good sentence as well as “dress up” words (adjectives) that make our writing more interesting and allows the reader to get a better mental picture.

Math -We are finishing Chapter 4 which is Data and Graphing. The chapter test will be on Wed, Oct. 22nd. The chapter review was  in the work envelope last Monday and is due on Oct 22nd as well. Please return it on time as we are working on becoming responsible learners. Please be faithful in doing Math drills at home. It will really pay off.

Social Science -We are working on Chapter 4 which is Our Changing World and connecting that to how life all around us changes.

Science – Our theme for October isPumpkins and Harvest. We will learn what pumpkins need to grow and the many different things you can do with a pumpkin. We will integrate this into our Math and writing as well. We are writing a pumpkin book on how a pumpkin grows and matures.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book Bags and Work Envelopes – Just a continued reminder that book bags and work envelopes are due every Friday. Please assist your child in being responsible to return both ON TIME. Imagine that!!!  There are many who are forgetting. This is where the training begins for the older grades when turning in something late means a lower grade.

Bible – We will be studying  the Exodus out of Egypt for the Children of Israel.

Absences – The flu season is coming!!! If your child is sick or gone for more than one day, please call our office (292-7704) and come by the school to pick up your child’s missed work. If your child is gone only one day, I will send the missed work home on the day he/she returns. If they are gone 2 or more days, their work will be gathered and left with Mrs. Roberts. Just let me know when you want to pick it up.Also, if your child is leaving school early and you know ahead of time, please email me or send me a note so I can be sure your child has everything that is needed. This will be really helpful. I understand there are emergencies where this is not possible.

Spirit Day is every Friday. Please wear your favorite FCS shirt.

SCIENCE

This quarter we will begin a study of the ocean habitat.  We will learn about the rocky seashore, the sandy shore,  the wetlands, kelp forest, deep sea canyons, tide pools, open ocean, marine mammals, sharks, skates, and rays, fishes, and food webs in the sea.  In art we will learn to draw the great blue whale.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 7.7 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts. We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the Name of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to collect 300 shoeboxes at Fresno Christian Elementary by November 10 for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect.  Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

BIBLE

This quarter we will finish our study in Unit 2 of Abraham and the story of Isaac.  We will begin Unit 3 with the story of Jacob and his brother Esau and their struggle over the birthright and blessing. We will also explore the challenges of Joseph and his 11 brothers and learn how Joseph is sold into slavery in Egypt, follows after God’s own heart, and rises from prison to palace as the second highest in command of all of Egypt, the most powerful country in the world at this time in history.  We will also continue to hide God’s word in our hearts as we memorize character trait verses each week which teach about following Christ’s example.

WRITING

This 2nd quarter our third grade class will be  focusing on writing a personal narrative on an event or an experience in their lives.  They will be taught to write a beginning paragraph which will include the characters and setting,  a middle paragraph with the events, supporting facts or details to help the reader imagine the event or experience and an ending that ties it all together.  We will continue to review correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.  Students will also learn how to use the rubric to see the expectations and to grade their own writing.  Benchmark writing assessments will be in December.

READING
During Second Quarter we will continue short stories and literature studies in small groups as we experience celebrating traditions, discover animal habitats, sail with voyagers, and read incredible stories.  We will study key vocabulary, making inferences in comprehension, categorize and classify, identify topics, main ideas, and supporting details, and compare fantasy and realism.

On Friday, October 24, Joni Eareckson Tada will be speaking to students and their families from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the People’s Church auditorium. This is a rare and priceless opportunity to hear an inspiring message from one of today’s most influential Christian speakers. Each student is allowed to invite two adult guests. The free reservations adult guests must be made by emailing the Joni and Friends Central California office directly: jafcentralcal@gmail.com. The gym will be packed with vendors selling handmade goods and many great items to make your Christmas shopping easy. Supporting our boutique, by shopping or being a vendor, will help raise funds for Fresno Christian and Square Heart Shops. Square Heart Shops is a non-profit organization that asks people to de-clutter their craft closets and donate items to be repurposed and sold to help people who want to adopt, go on mission trips or just need to learn a skill to earn an income. You can visit their website and learn more about their cause at www.squareheartshops.com. If you are interested in being a vendor or volunteering at the boutique, please contact Square Heart Shops directly at shopalot@squareheartshops.com. Vendor applications will be reviewed and accepted based on order received and items being sold.

Operation Christmas Child – Our chapel on Tuesday will explain this wonderful opportunity.

Report Cards – Report cards will go home this week.  At this stage of development , a letter grade of P which means progressing, is very acceptable in academic areas. It doesn’t mean your child isn’t doing an good job.If they knew everything at a satisfactory or excellent level in this stage of the game, I would be out of a job!!!!! However, the N’s in Character Development  are not. Your report card will say “Needs More Time”,for an N.

Simonian Farms – We will be going for our pumpkin field trip this year to Simonian Farms on Thursday, October 16th.. We will travel by bus, leaving at 9:45 AM and returning by 12:30 PM. Please send a lunch and drink with your child and wear our Tally’s Treasures spirit wear shirts. It should be lots of fun. The children have already paid through tuition and there is no charge for parents unless they want to buy a pumpkin. All are welcome to come. I will have a sign-up sheet outside our door if you are able to come, however, no siblings may come. This is a new rule this year.

Reading – We continue to work on comprehension, both stated and inferred. Inferential comprehension is extremely challenging for some. We will be working on this throughout the year. There is so much language processing involved in this activity. As the children move up in the grades, this skill is so very important. Continue to read and study vocabulary that is assigned. Studying vocabulary is critical to make good progress and some groups are struggling with thisAbout 5-10 minutes an evening will make a big difference, realizing some who struggle with visual memory might need to spend a little more time. These words are all in the stories so there is plenty of text practice with these words.  Just studying the words in isolation will not put it into long term memory which is our goal.

Writing – The children did a wonderful job on their 1st quarter writing assessment. We will start writing about an expository place incorporating all the elements of a good sentence as well as “dress up” words (adjectives) that make our writing more interesting and allows the reader to get a better mental picture.

Math -We are on  Chapter 4 which is Data and Graphing. The children are doing well with this chapter. The chapter test will be on Wed Oct. 22nd.  The chapter review will be in the work envelope on Monday. Please be faithful in doing Math drills at home.  It will really pay off.

Social Science -We are working on Chapter 4 which is Our Changing World and connecting that to how the children change.

Science – Our theme for October is Pumpkins and Harvest. We will learn what pumpkins need to grow and the many different things you can do with a pumpkin. We will integrate this into our Math and writing as well. We will be writing a pumpkin book on how a pumpkin grows and matures.

Show and Tell – This week is Team A. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book Bags and Work Envelopes – Just a continued reminder that book bags and work envelopes are due every Friday. Please assist your child in being responsible to return both ON TIME. Imagine that!!! This is where the training begins for the older grades when turning in something late means a lower grade.

Bible – We will be studying Moses and learning what it means to obey God even if we think we are incapable of doing what He has asked us to do.

Book Order – The book order will be submitted on Oct.15th.. Please be sure you have ordered by then if you are interested. You will order and pay online. You will have many more options than what is in your child’s grade level pamphlet. It is a very easy site to navigate. There are also free perks when you order online. Our class activation code is J4ZNG.

I understand there are emergencies where this is not possible. images

Spirit Day is every Friday. Please wear your favorite FCS shirt.

HAVE A TERRIFIC WEEK !

BRICKS 4 KIDS:

This is the last week to sign up to participate in the Bricks 4 Kidz after school program. Call J&D Mind Builders @ 285-1725 or go online to www.bricks4kidz.com/northfresno-clovis to enroll.

READING LEXILE:

Parents, thank you for your patience while the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) was being prepared for the year. The students have taken the test and brought home a report last week which shows their reading lexile. Please let me know if you did not receive that report. The goal is to have your child read in the 700-1,000 target range by the end of the school year.

OCTOBER READING:

Students will independently read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework.

The genre for the month of October is science fiction. Students should show their selected science fiction book to me for approval. As a response to this literature, students will make a shoebox diorama, with a description of the scene and the page number from the book glued or taped on one side of the box, and the title, author and summary of the book glued or taped on the other side of the box. The students have been given the grading rubric. Check out the following websites for ideas on making a shoebox diorama.

LITERATURE:

We are currently reading the book, “Sign of the Beaver,” by Elizabeth George Speare. This is a Newbery Honor Book which tells the story of 12 year old Matt as he faces challenges and dangers alone in the Maine wilderness of 1763. This literature study enhances our research of the North American Natives.

MATH:

This week we continue Chapter 3: Multiplication.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

This week students will work in groups to research a particular Native American region.

BIBLE:

This week we continue Unit 2: Writing in the Books of Poetry.

SCRIPTURE MEMORY VERSE:

Students will memorize scripture weekly and take a written test each Friday. The memory verse for this week is John 11:25-26 and the test will be this Friday, October 17. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, punctuation, grammar and scripture reference.
