Mr. Miranda October 6, 2014

Dear Parents,

We are at the end of the first quarter and I’m including some information to help you better understand the subject area scores on Gradebook.

Testing

Scores will continue to be entered through this Friday, October 10.

Reading Writing Connection: Character Analysis

Students are working on character analysis as our response to literature. I posted instructions on a take home assignment in a previous newsletter on the FCS website newsletter connection. I also gave each student these instructions in a hard copy. It will be due on Friday, October 10.

Reading Comprehension:

During the course of the first quarter we completed and corrected worksheets titled Jumpstart Reading. The students have taken several of these as tests that have been graded and posted. Additionally, they are taking other reading comprehension tests. These will continue to be graded and posted on Gradebook.

SRI:

Please note that students are now able to take an SRI inventory for a lexile score. Students can take tests on computers that are available on a mobil lab in class. I will give this grading weight accordingly. Remind your student to give his/her best effort.

Language/Writing:

Students need to have these assignments turned in:

Onomotepeia- Using sound words in a paragraph (homework)

Adjectives- Describe a busy street scene (in class assignment)

Book Jacket- Book summary (project as homework)

Personal Narrative- (assigned in class or homework)

Extra – Write a summary of what you learned in Social Studies so far.

Science

No science first quarter. Students will receive instruction in Science quarter 2.

Social Studies

Two open book tests that cover all the lessons in Chapter 1 and lesson 1 Chapter 2. Students read and discussed lessons in class and answered questions orally. Students took a practice open book test with help in class. No grade was given. A second open book test was given students worked independently on this. This grade will be entered this week. A second test will be given Monday, October 6.

Bible:

In Bible, the students need to turn in worksheets accumulated during the first quarter as a workpacketHeroes of Faith.” Students can ask me for any missing worksheets. Most students have all the sheets in their Bible folders in class as nothing was sent home. This will be heavily weighted towards their final grade. The packet needs to be complete and neat. We will be putting all the work together in class to turn in Monday, October 6.

Memory Verse this week

Dear Parents,             October 6, 2014

Harvest and Fall is our theme for this week. Be watching for a pumpkin book to come home soon!

What a wonderful time we had with all the grandparents!!! They are lots of fun!!

Our character trait is Friendship. Please continue to earn money for the little missionary books we sent home a few weeks ago. Keep sending letters regarding instances your child exhibits any of our character traits. It’s such a great way to reinforce good behavior!

Our verse this week is, H-“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” Revelation 4:8. Remember to practice at home.

Please send a plain white pillowcase for your child. We will dye and cut them for our Indian costumes for the Thanksgiving Celebration.

Our Pumpkin Patch field trip is Friday, October 17. We’ll ride the bus, but if you bring a sibling you will have to drive a car. We will have a picnic there so send a SACK LUNCH (disposable containers please). Chaperones may ride the bus… but if you want a quiet, peaceful ride you should take your own car.

The Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes are due by November 10. Thank you for giving “Christmas” to a child who would get nothing.

It should be lots of fun.  The children have already paid through tuition and there is no charge for parents unless they want to buy a pumpkin. All are welcome to come.  I will have a sign-up sheet outside our door if you are able to come, however, no siblings may come.  This is a new rule this year.

Language Arts – We continue to work on our Anthology Book. Many are rushing through their seat work and in particular, comprehension. Some are not even reading the story or information that applies to the questions. We have talked at length about being a careful reader. When you are reading at home, please quiz your child about what they are reading by asking who, what, why and when questions,  Have them list the characters and their significance in the story. We continue to work hard on this as well at school.

Book Bags and Work Envelopes – Just a reminder that book bags and work envelopes are due every Friday. Please assist your child in being responsible to return both ON TIME. Imagine that!!! This is where the training begins for the older grades when turning in something late means a lower grade.

Bible – We will be continue with Joseph and learn about the power of forgiveness.

Book Order – You will have a book pamphlets in your envelope this week. The book order will be submitted on Oct.15th.. Please be sure you have ordered by then if you are interested. As a response to this literature, students will make a shoebox diorama, with a description of the scene and the page number from the book glued or taped on one side of the box, and the title, author and summary of the book glued or taped on the other side of the box. The students have been given the grading rubric. Check out the following websites for ideas on making a shoebox diorama.

.Dear Parents,                                              September 29, 2014

Thank you to those of you who help so faithfully in the classroom. We couldn’t accomplish all the things we do without you!!!

Our theme this week is “All About Me”. Our character trait is “contentment”, being happy or satisfied with who we are (i.e. The way God made us) and with what we have (the things God has given us). Even as adults, we struggle with this at times. When your child brings his/her “Me” book home on Friday, please be sure to read and discuss it together. You may learn some new things about your little one.

Our verse this week is “God is love,” I John 4:8.

We are going to the Hillcrest Pumpkin Patch the morning of Friday, October 17 from 8:00– 12:00. We are taking a bus. REMEMBER TO BRING A SACK LUNCH! Let us know if you can chaperone.

Our Discovery Center field trip is the morning of November 7. More news to come on this GREAT trip!!!

SPELLINGCITY.COM

This year, we will be using VocabularySpellingCity.com in our classroom.  VocabularySpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.

As a teacher, I will put up my weekly spelling lists on VocabularySpelling City and your children can review the words, and play spelling and vocabulary games with their words to reinforce the learning process.

Here is how to help your child master his or her spelling and vocabulary words:

Simply go to www.spellingcity.com to see how the site works.  To get started, click on “Sample Lists” and choose any list your like.  Then try the Teach MeTest Me, or Play a Game link.

You can find our class’ spelling lists by using the Find A List feature and searching for my name, Mrs. Fraser, or you can go directly to my VocabularySpellingCity homepage at spellingcity.com/cherifraser33.  You can bookmark this URL on your computer to make it easy for your child to access the class’ word lists each week!

Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with Spelling City.  Please encourage your children to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before their weekly test.  Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent, lifelong learner.

Dear Families

Fall has arrived!!! What a beautiful season of the year…..my favorite!!!!! Now, if only the temperature is starting to cooperate. We are looking forward to October in Room 524. The first quarter is coming to a close and the children are adjusting well . So much progress has already been made.

A big thank you for all those who went and helped on our field trip.  It was great.

Power School – All the scores from Spelling, Bible Verse, Dictation and Conventions (periods, proper capitals). With the scores separated in Dictation and Copy it is easy to see what your child is struggling with and what kind of extra practice is needed at home. Math Tests and Chapter Review are also recorded. If you are unfamiliar with the Power School process just check in with Central Office and they can walk you through the steps and give you your password.

Language Arts – We continue to talk about the setting and characters of the story. Mrs. King is doing a great job on Word Builders each day and I can already see the children applying these phonetic strategies during our reading groups and classroom reading. Going over Word Builders at home a couple times a week will be very helpful. Remember these words only need to be blended and read, not spelled. Mrs.Devereaux is going a great job with Reading groups and progress is being made. Be faithful in reading each night the books that come home in the bags and the reading assignment and vocab each week. Most of our reading now is sight as we continue to build our phonetic skills.Be sure to turn in your book bags every Friday.  Mrs. Devereaux is only getting about half of them

Math -We are finishing the chapter on Addition and Subtraction to 10. Our test is Thurs. Oct. 2nd. The chapter review is due on the day of the test and is worth 10 pts. in Power School.Be faithful with the Math Drills. It will really pay off.

Social Science – We are working on Rules and Laws Rules, which will also be completed at the end of the month. God’s word has a lot to say about obeying laws.

Science – The children are enjoying the study of apples. We are working on an apple book as well. We are also learning what the different parts of the apple are called. On September 26th we will will have an apple tasting activity. A sign-up is on the door for the items needed. This is always a very fun activity.

Bible -. We will be studying Joseph, Jacob and Esau

Show and Tell – This week is Team A. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Grandparent’s DayFriday, October 3rd is Grandparent’s Day. This is always a very fun time for the children. If you do not have grandarents that can attend, please feel free to invite a senior friend. We will also share grandparents for those who have none when we do our special activities. No one will be left out. More details and the schedule will be forthcoming.

Boxtops For Education – This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school.
