Mr. Miranda

Dear Parents,

We had some technical difficulties with our Newsletter site. All my previous posts are lost.

So, this will be the new “first post.” When I get a chance, I will try to repost the past newsletters and date them accordingly. In the meantime, here is some current information.

Math

Our next math test will be Friday. Those students that will be out this Friday can do a make up on Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Dooley.

We took a math test today that I plan to have scored by tomorrow and share with students.

We will start lesson 12 on negative integers tomorrow followed by adding/subtracting whole numbers and decimals. Emphasis with larger numbers is regrouping.

Grammar test on Tuesday.

Students need to identify the subject and predicate in a sentence. They should be able to identify as well as correctly use linking verbs.

Spelling Vocabulary homework goes out today. It is due tomorrow.

This Friday we will test spelling words AND definitions.

Verse for this week is

Week 3:

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people

were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to

keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good

news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I

was sent.”

Luke 4:42-43

PLEASE NOTE THAT STUDENTS CAN TAKE A PICTURE OF THE TEXTBOOK PAGES ASSIGNED FOR HOMEWORK OR STUDY WITH THEIR IPAD OR IPHONE. TEXTBOOKS TAKEN HOME MUST BE RETURNED THE NEXT DAY.

Mrs. Vander Kooi August 25, 2014

Dear Parents,

This week’s newsletter was late due to problems with the program at school. I apologize for the late posting.

FUNDRAISER:

Only 2 weeks left to sell!  Students, be sure to get in on a LOT of GREAT prizes by selling as much as you can to your friends, family members, and neighbors. With so many choices like Signature gift catalog items, cookie dough, magazines and VIP cards, you’re bound to have something available to sell to everyone. Don’t forget to tell them that we are raising the money for our co-curricular actives like Music, Art, Drama, Spanish and PE. Without this money, those activities don’t exist!

Your fundraising money AND order forms must be turned in on September 11th. Packets must be given to your teacher ASAP that morning. The PST Board will be counting as soon as the packets have been collected from each class. Delivery for items will be Thursday, October 9th behind Building 5.

AUGUST READING:

Students will be asked to read a book from a different genre each month. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework. The book for August is a free choice genre and students will design a book jacket for it. The book jacket will show the title, author’s name, main character(s) and setting on the front cover. Students will write a summary of the story on the back cover. Paper will be provided in class and the grading rubric was handed out two weeks ago.

WRITING:

This week students will practice writing summaries and personal opinions of stories in preparation for the 1st Quarter writing assessment, Response to Literature.

MATH:

Students will be tested on the following this Thursday, August 28: reading and writing numbers through billions in standard and expanded form, reading and writing numbers through billions with exponents, and comparing, ordering and rounding whole numbers through billions. These concepts are found on pages 4-23 in the Math textbook.

PARENT CORNER

AS THE YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE. . .

Yes!  The last week of school has arrived!  Hard to believe?  This week is still an important one as we wrap up all the training and guidance.  It’s a time of reflection about  our year.  The activities we do are designed to bring closure to our experiences.  Thank you for stressing the academic importance of this week in staying focused.

As we ponder our past year, our third grade class has experienced God’s faithfulness and bonding together as a family.  We have brought together our individual and unique personalities while the Lord has caused each of us to trust Him through the triumphs and challenges.  I praise God for His presence in the spirit of each student.  We will feel the heart-tugs as we part our ways for the summer.

The parent support and involvement through prayer, cards, notes, and volunteer work as room-parents, carpoolers, and chaperones has been a tremendous encouragement and blessing to me.  Your lives have deeply enriched mine.  Thank you for your generous spirit.  Blessings from above for a wonderful, relaxing summer!

MIGHTY PRAYER WARRIORS FOR MICAH

Please continue to lift up Micah daily in his recovery from foot surgery last Friday, May 16 in Sacramento.  We wish to pray for comfort and easing of pain.  Remember Preston, Kori, and Mallory in your prayers.  We look forward to seeing Micah on Thursday at the swim party.  Please contact Emily Phillips or Patty Steele if you would like to help with provisions for the party at the Friesen home.

NO PARENT HELPERS

BACKPACKS

Please continue to bring your backpack to school each day this week.  We will be bringing home several things.   Please keep your school box in your backpack.  You will need it for several activities this week.

MINIMUM DAYS

Just a reminder that Thursday and Friday are MINIMUM days with release time at 12:00 PM.
