I hope all you moms had a wonderful mothers day being spoiled and pampered by your family!!!

We are coming close to the end of the year and I can not believe how quickly time has flown! Thank you to all of you who were able to come to open house. I hope you enjoyed seeing all the hard work your child has put into our classroom. Making a rain forest is hard work! Putting together the slide show of pictures from the entire year brought back lots of memories and reminded me of all the time we have spent together. It’s crazy how time flies!

Last week the kids had a blast learning all about fire safety and the various jobs of a fireman!! A BIG thank you to Mr. Woods for graciously volunteering us your time!!! We had so much fun!!

SWIM PARTYClass Swim Party: This year our class swim party will be celebrated on Tuesday May 20th from 11:30-2:30 at the Pimentel’s house. Thank you to the Pimentel family for graciously opening up their home to our kids! Please do not forget to send you child with a towel to the party. Paper products and drinks will be provided, however I have sent out a sign up sheet for food items. If you are able to assist please sign up for whatever is convenient. The Pimentel’s have a pool and trampoline, if you do not wish for your child to be on the trampoline during the party please let me know. Also, you must provide your child with a way to get to the party. If you are unable to do so please let me know ASAP. You do not need to come to campus first this day. Again, If you will need a ride from school, please let me know as we will not be organizing formal carpools. You will also need to pick up your child after the party is over, or make arrangements for them to get home. We will not be going back to People’s Campus.  Again, if you need help with this, just let me know.

Language Arts: We will be doing our reading and writing benchmarks (keyword outline). We have finished our spelling book so we will be doing some fun activities!

Math: We will be taking our benchmarks to see our progress in math. We will also continue working on our unit in geometry, fractions, and probability.

cleanSpring Cleaning: This week we will start doing a clean out of everything that needs to come home. Please make sure they bring their backpack to school to hold their things.

PARENT CORNER

IN APPRECIATION

Thank you to all who were able to come out and join us for Open House and The Fine Arts Festival Night last Tuesday evening.  The third graders did  a fantastic job square dancing and looked terrific in their Fresno History costumes!  They enjoyed being your personal tour guide for the evening and showing you their hard work and accomplishments for the year.  I am so proud of them!  I also want to thank all of your parents who so diligently helped us prepare for Open House Night by giving of your time and love.  What a blessing you were to me!

MOTHER’S DAY

I pray you had a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend with your family and felt loved and appreciated.  Mothers  play such an important Godly role in the development of our children and we thank you for all of your love, guidance, patience, and care extended. Thank you for your tremendous help in the classroom this year, field trips, and holiday celebrations.  You are amazing and dearly appreciated!

PRAYERS FOR THE FRIESEN FAMILY

As a class we want to lift up Micah as he prepares for surgery in Sacramento  at Shriner’s Hospital on Friday, May 16.  Let’s remember his whole family, Preston, Kori, Micah’s sister, Mallory, and their grandparents as the time draws near.  We pray for God’s great blessings on the family for grace, courage, peace, and strength.  Our class looks forward to seeing Micah at the swim party next week on Thursday, May 22 to cheer him on with great encouragement.  We have strong third grade prayer warriors and our God is an AWESOME!  He is MIGHTY to save!!

ACADEMICS

Amid the fun rewards and activities planned for the next two full weeks, we still will set our focus on finishing strong academically, behaviorally, and spiritually.  Please have your child arrive on time.   Academics will continue as we near the “Finish Line.”  We will run the race God has set before us and set our eyes on Jesus to do our very best!

BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS

This week we will complete our Benchmark Assessments in reading, math, and writing.

END OF FOURTH QUARTER

The end of the 4th quarter is quickly approaching.  Please note that last day for students to turn in re-do assignments or re-take tests will be THURSDAY, MAY 15th.   Please check your child’s grades on Powerschool and make sure they have turned in all assignments.

FIELD DAY

 Wednesday, May 14 our elementary grades are  celebrating with a Play Day in the  afternoon on the West Field.    Pizza lunch is also being provided.  It should be a great afternoon with bounce houses, water slides,  and other exciting activities. A flier will be coming home about this fun afternoon.

ELEMENTARY DRAMA

Friday, May 16 Grades 1-6 are invited to see the elementary drama class directed by Mr. Broesma perform the play “The Bible in 30 Minutes” in the North Lobby Chapel from 8:00-9:00 AM.  Be sure to be on time!  Mr. Broesma’s 5th and 6th grade drama classes always deliver a highly entertaining production.

CLASS REWARD

Last Friday, May 9 our class reached our goal of 100 marbles in the Super Behavior Marble Jar!!  We will celebrate making wise choices with a pizza lunch on Thursday, May 15 and class time together watching the movie FROZEN in the afternoon.  You will still want to send a morning snack.  Mrs. Dansby will provide a lunch dessert.  Water will be provided.

BIBLE

We continue our study in Unit 5 of God’s Law in Exodus with our “Journey from Egypt to Canaan” Booklet.  We will focus on the Old Testament Exodus stories of Moses and Jethro,  The Giving of the Law,  The Ten Commandments:  Love God Above All, and The Ten Commandments:  Love Your Neighbor.

MATH

This week we begin Chapter 9 Division Facts.  We will be learning more about division of whole numbers.  You can expect to see work that provides practice with dividing by 10, 6, 7, and 9.  Students will learn about fact families and how to use a multiplication table to divide.  Vocabulary will include:

Dividend–the number that is divided in a division problem

Divisor–the number by which a number is divided in a division problem

Array–an arrangement of objects, pictures, or numbers in equal columns and equal rows

LANGUAGE ARTS

We will study the tense of verbs:  present, past, and future.  We will also study irregular verbs with special forms.  We will also practice prompts in personal letters focusing on organizing ideas to include all 5 parts of a personal letter:  date, greeting, body, closing, and signature.  We will concentrate on using complete sentences, correct grammar, indentation, capitalization, and punctuation.  We will also complete our Scholastic Reading Inventories this week on Friday, May 16 during Computer Lab to measure our lexile level growth in comprehension.  We will review cursive handwriting techniques for connecting letters and writing fluently.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS

Final Scholastic book orders were placed on Friday, May 9  and will be shipped to arrive on or near Friday, May 16.

SCIENCE

We are beginning a unit in physical science on electricity and electrical safety.   Silas Emerian’s father,Jayson Emerian, is a licensed general contractor and electrician.  He will be visiting our classroom on Monday, May 12 at 12:30 to talk about understanding electricity and electrical safety.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will begin Unit 5 Standing United with Chapter 9:  America’s Cherished Ideals which includes national and local symbols, American landmarks, identifying state capitals and borders, songs and words of liberty, and telling fact from fiction.

 WATER BOTTLES

Be sure to bring a water bottle every day for the last two weeks of school to help your child stay hydrated during rising temperatures.

 FINAL AWARDS CHAPEL

Parents are welcome to attend our last chapel of the year at the People’s Campus on Wednesday, May 21 from 12:45-2:15 in the GL Johnson Chapel for Grades 1-4.   After the awards chapel, parents are invited to our classroom where students will be given their Character Trait Awards.

YEAR END SWIMMING PARTY

Our final celebration of the year will be Thursday, May 22th, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. at Micah Friesen’s house.   This is a Half Day.  All are welcome to attend.  We will meet at Preston and Kori Friesen’s house at 10:00 AM.  You do not need to come to our campus first.

If you will need a ride from school, please let me know, as we will not be organizing formal carpools. You will also need to pick up your child after the party is over, or make arrangements for them to get home. We will not be going back to People’s Campus.  Again, if you need help with this, just let me know.

Dear Families,

   I trust all our moms had a wonderful day being honored and spoiled.  There truly is no higher calling, and you all do such a wonderful job of loving and caring for your family. 

angel thank youOpen House was a very fun evening. The children were so excited to show you all of their projects. The cultural dancing was wonderful!!! Thanks for coming and enjoying this evening together. 

Fasten your seat belts!!!!  The end of the year is on it’s way and the sand and the beach will be here soon!!!! We will have a fun, glorious ride these last two weeks, celebrating all the accomplishments of the children and our time together as a community of learners. God has truly blessed us!!!!

THE UGLY DUCKLING –  We will be going to the Tower Theatre to see this musical. The date is Tuesday, May 13th.  We will be traveling in carpools, leaving at 10:15 AM with a show time of 11:00 AMWe will go to Bob Belcher Park  for lunch after the show. Please send a sack lunch and drink with your child.  If you have not returned the required carpool permission slip, please do so. Also, you can drop off booster sets in our classroom on Tues. morning.

YEAR END SWIM PARTY:

THANK YOU  to the Triplitt family for hosting the year-end swim party on Friday, May 23, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Our room mom, Mrs. Villines, will organize the food and drinks. PLEASE LET HER KNOW IF  YOU’RE WILLING TO HELP.

READING:

The required reading for the month of May is student’s choice. There will be no written response. The book must be read by Friday, May 16. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework.

MATH:

The 5th grade test on Chapter 7: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions will be on Thursday, May 15. The 6th grade test on Chapter 7: Ratio, Proportion and Percent will be on Wednesday, May 14.

SCIENCE:

This week we continue our study of the solar system. Each student is making an informational foldable about a planet in our solar system.

BIBLE:

This week we continue Unit 7 which focuses on Luke’s writings about the early church.

BIBLE MEMORY VERSE:

The memory verse for this week is Zephaniah 3:17 and the test will be Friday, May 16. Students will be graded on writing the verse accurately, including correct wording, spelling, grammar, punctuation and the scripture reference.

PARENT CORNER

IN APPRECIATION

Thank you for all your help transporting students to the Coke Hallowell River Center.  The children had a beautiful walk around Hidden Homes Nature Trail recognizing many animals from their reports,  enjoyed lots of hands-on exhibits, and participating in a fun Reader’s Theater about the Sierra Nevada Mountains and San Joaquin River with costumes and all!  The Gift Shop was a hit!  Third graders all found a nature treasure to bring home while shopping.  Our class really appreciated the snacks and cold water.  Thanks so very much!

CLASSROOM OPEN HOUSE AND FINE ARTS FESTIVAL

Come and join us for a fabulous evening of Fine Arts, Music, and Open House tomorrow evening, May 6 at 6:30 P.M. We will begin in our classroom and then head out to the Chapel of People’s Church for the 3rd Grade Square Dancing and the Fine Arts Festival.  When you hear the pioneer triangle clanging, we will head over to the G.L Johnson Chapel where the Elementary Fine Arts Festival will be.  Second grade will perform their cultural dances and 3rd grade will perform their square dances outside of the chapel. Then you are invited into the G.L. Johnson Chapel where the  upper grades will perform.

As part of “Fresno History Day” third graders will dress up as Fresno pioneers for the square dancing performance in the EVENING planned by Mrs. Ainley, our music teacher that evening.  Students may come dressed in any of the following ways:  Yokut Native American Indian, fur trapper, gold miner Fresno pioneer, cowboy, or cowgirl.

Don’t forget to check out the Young Authors book signing table where first place winning elementary student authors will be available to autograph your purchased copy of their award winning books!  Proceeds go to the library to purchase more books for our growing library.

We are asking that each family bring one dozen cookies for Open House, May 6th.  You can bring them that morning or in the afternoon when you pick up your child from school.

MATH TEST

Thursday, May 8  we will have a math test over Chapter 8 Division Facts.  A  pre-test will be sent home today attached to the newsletter to help students prepare for this test.  Please turn your pre-test in with your homework folder on Thursday.

FRESNO FIRE TRUCK

Grades 1-3 will enjoy a visit from the Fresno Fire Department with a fire truck on Wednesday, May 7 at 10:30 AM.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDER

Our last on-line Scholastic Book order will be placed on Friday, May 9 after school.  Be sure to get your in book placed by 3:30 PM if you wish to order.

PARENT NOTICE FROM THE LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

As we come to the end of our school year would you please encourage your students to return all items checked out from the Library. The final due date for all materials is Friday, May 10. Reminders of items checked out will be sent to the students beginning the week of May 6. There is a fine of $25.00 for each item that is not returned.
Many wonderful titles are lost each year because they are not returned. We greatly appreciate your assistance in getting books back in and onto the shelves so the collection is ready to go in August.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

END OF FOURTH QUARTER

The end of the 4th quarter is quickly approaching.  Tuesday, May 13th will be the last day for students to turn in re-do assignments or re-take tests for the 4th quarter.  Please check your child’s grades on Powerschool and make sure they have turned in all assignments.

 FINAL AWARD CHAPEL

Parents are welcome to attend our last chapel of the year at the People’s Campus on Wednesday, May 21 from 12:45-2:15 in the GL Johnson Chapel for Grades 1-4.   After the awards chapel, parents are invited to our classroom where students will be given their Character Trait Awards.

YEAR END SWIMMING PARTY

Our final celebration of the year will be Thursday, May 22th, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. at Micah Friesen’s house.   This is a Half Day.  All are welcome to attend.  We will meet at Preston and Kori Friesen’s house at 10:00 AM.  You do not need to come to our campus first.

If you will need a ride from school, please let me know, as we will not be organizing formal carpools. You will also need to pick up your child after the party is over, or make arrangements for them to get home. We will not be going back to People’s Campus.  Again, if you need help with this, just let me know.

Dear Families, 

It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our year end Convocation.  We have much to celebrate as God has so richly blessed this 2013-14 school year.

I will finalize our final book order on Monday, May 5th.

openhs2OPEN HOUSE – Our Diorama book project is due the morning of  Open House on May 6th. You may drop it off in the classroom before school starts. We will also do an Oral Presentation on our project after Open House for this project. The Diorama will come back home on Friday, May 9th.  On Open House night we will be performing our cultural dances with Mrs. Ainley.  Please have your child wear their class t-shirts. You will come up to our room first at 6:30 PM and at about 7ish we will head over to the G.L Johnson Chapel where the Elementary Fine Arts Festival will be.  Before Grades 4-6 perform inside, 2nd and 3rd grade will perform their dances outside of the chapel. You are welcome to also go in the chapel and see the upper grades perform.

fieldtrpTHE UGLY DUCKLING –  We will be going to the Tower Theatre to see this musical.  The date is Tuesday, May 13th.  We will be traveling in carpools, leaving at 10:15 AM with a show time of 11:00 AM. We will go to a park for lunch after the show. Please return the carpool permission slip that was in the Monday Work Envelope by Friday, May 9th.

cat-sleeping-on-stack-of-books-thumbLANGUAGE ARTS –   We will have our last Reading Log on May 9th which will be due May 16th. We will continue with our Reading groups until the last week of school.  All   anthology books (blue or brown) need to be returned by Friday, May 9th.

mathMATH –   We are  are on Time and Calendar. We are learning to tell time to the quarter hour. Please practice at home with clocks. Emphasize starting with the hour hand and then move to the minute hand. We start with the one on the clock to start counting minutes and count by fives until we reach the minute hand. The Chapter Review will go home on Tuesday, April 29th.  The test will be on Tuesday, May 6th. The review will be due on that day as well. Our last chapter will be Measurements, but we will not have a chapter test  on this unit.

SOCIAL SCIENCE – We will continue studying the Marketplace and will finish it up next week.

BIBLE – We will be studying Paul.

READING:

The required reading for the month of May is student’s choice. There will be no written response. Class time will be given every day for silent reading and students are expected to read a minimum  of 10 pages a day. If they are unable to complete this in class, then reading becomes homework.

The 5th grade continues Chapter 7 with Addition and Subtraction of Fractions. The 6th grade will continue Chapter 7: Ratio, Proportion and Percent.
