Dear Parents,                                                February 24, 2014

This week we continue to study plants.  Our Bible verse is 11 Peter 1:4, “He has given us VERY great and precious promises”.  We will continue KINDNESS as our character trait.  I will continue to pick one “smilebringer” each day.  When it’s your child’s turn he or she will bring home a crown with all the kind things the class has said about him/her.  We will continue until every child has an opportunity to be a “smilebringer”.

We are practicing hard in “K” to get ready for First grade.  Please remember to review these things;

FCS AUCTION

The FCS auction is underway!  This is our largest fundraising event each year.  We are excited about setting our goals even higher than last year.  The auction is a great way to donate to our school.  Your donations will bless the lives of others.

You received the information about our class basket which is a “Beach” theme.  Please start thinking about your gift or donation.  We are asking each child’s family to contact family, friends, neighbors, and merchants to make a donation to our auction.  Students will be given a ticket for every 10 points they earn in donations.  I am hoping that each family will find that special something to donate to the auction.

I would like to encourage you to support this event by giving or getting donations of services, trips, items, desserts, and/or dinner tickets.  The dinner/silent and live auction will take place  on Saturday, March 15th, from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the FCS Gym.

GET-A-WAY LUNCH WITH MRS. FRASER & A FRIEND

I will once again be donating  a “GET-A-WAY LUNCH WITH MRS. FRASER AND A FRIEND” at the FCS Auction Dinner Night!  One third grade child will be allowed to bring a friend with them as we all enjoy lunch together!  This item will be listed in the Silent Auction section and will go to the highest bidder.  If you are interested in this item and aren’t able to attend, have someone bid for you!

BIBLE

As we begin Unit 4 The Exodus, we will study how God prepares Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.  We will learn about how the 10 plagues displayed God’s power and might to the Israelites and the Egyptians.  We will also observe how God fulfilled His promise to Abraham and his descendants by making the people of Israel into a great nation during their years in Egypt.  We will learn how the Passover supper was instituted to remind the people of how God had delivered them as they left Egypt.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDER

Our Scholastic On-Line Book order is due Friday, February 28.  Use our one-time Class Activation Code when you register:  L9NJ4.  Submit your online order to Mrs. Fraser’s class.  Secure checkout–pay with a credit or debit card.  Books are delivered to our classroom.  Thank you!

MATH

During the next few weeks, our class will be learning about the multiplication of whole numbers.  You can expect to see work that provides practice in multiplying 6, 7, 8, and 9.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we continue our study of writing fictional narratives and are busy on our rough drafts, revising and crafting words with descriptive details.

SOCIAL STUDIES

This week we continue our study of Unit 3 Community History with Chapter 5  How Communities Began and reading time lines.  We will learn in Lesson 3 How Communities Change and discover our own community’s history of Fresno as we prepare for our field trip to the Meux Home Museum.

cat-sleeping-on-stack-of-books-thumbLANGUAGE ARTS – Although most are reading on their own, continue to ask your child what is happening at the beginning, middle and the end of the story, as well as the characters, setting, problem and solution in their stories.  We  are working on writing a Fictional Narrative. These will be the benchmarks for our next assessment in mid-March.

Math imagesMATH –Our test on Multiplication and Division will be on Tues. Feb. 25th.  The chapter review will also be due on that day as well. We will then begin a unit on Numbers and Patterns to 1000.We will continue to revisit multiplication and division as not everyone has mastered this.  Division is still challenging for some.  Any support you give at home would be greatly appreciated. Using counters helps tremendously.

FIVE – A DAY –  Continue to check your child’s Five-A-Day in each week’s envelope. You will be able to see the kinds of mistakes your child is making. We have discussed the correct answers at school, but they make corrections at home. You do not need to return these to school.

SOCIAL SCIENCE – We will do a project this week to reinforce where we live from planet, down to their neighborhood. In our book we are on ,”People Make a Difference”. We have had interesting discussions about what kind of person is a hero and what the Bible says about this concept. We will continue on these units through  the month of March.

SCIENCE – We will continue with our Dental Health Unit.

PEPHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING – This will take place on March 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th and 19th. It will be in the afternoons. If possible, please try not to schedule appointments for that week.  If it is unavoidable, there certainly will be make-ups.

SPEECHES AND HERITAGE DOLL – There will be no skill sheets or Book Project for the month of March. The requirement for the Reading Log will remain the same. They will be working on their speech and heritage doll which will keep them plenty busy!!! Speeches will be scheduled for the last week of March and the first week of April  These are done at 1:45 PM, and we will do three a day.The schedule was in the work envelope on February 18th. If the time I have chosen for you does not work,  just let me know and we will reschedule. The last Book Project will be a Diorama and will be due the morning of May 6th, which is Open House Day.

thankHELP – When your child completes work at home, please, please check it before it is returned to school.  I am receiving lots of work that has not been checked and is missing a name. Work that comes from home should be correct. Many Thanks!!!

Mrs. R’s Super Stars February 18th, 2014

Good Morning Parents! I hope you enjoyed these last two weeks of 3 day weekends. It’s always nice to have some extra time with our families. Thank you to those of you who were able to donate food and your time for our Valentine party last week. The kids had a wonderful time passing out their Valentine’s and eating candy to their hearts delight!!

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Field Trip: We will be taking a class field trip on Friday February 21st, 2014 to the Fresno Air Force Base. One of our own parents, John Gamber, is on the Air Force and will be giving the children a tour. The students will be traveling by bus. The bus will leave People’s church around 8:30am and return around 1:30pm. On this field trip the students are going to be able to experience various parts of  the base such as the maintenance group, where all the air crafts are parked. They will learn how different areas of the maintenance group contribute to making the air craft work. We will also be taking a trip to the Fire Department. It is just like a city fire department. They will have the opportunity to tour the vehicles and other areas that contribute to how the fire department works. Aden’s dad has graciously offered to provided a lunch from 12:00pm-1:00pm on the base. They will be served hot dogs, chips, snack, and a drink (juice/water). There will be no additional cost for this. In the beginning there will more than likely be some security checks prior to entering. At this point we believe it is ok for parents to bring their our car. For those who wish to follow the bus, you will enter though the West Gate which is on McKinley Ave just west of Peach Ave. You cannot miss it. There is a display of all the Wing’s past aircraft and a huge concrete structure. I will continue to communicate as more details arise! This is going to be such an exciting field trip for our little ones!! I can’t wait!!

Bible: We will be learning about Saul

Language Arts: This week the students will continue working in our reading groups. We are really focusing on fluency and reading faster through our books. We are also learning the main characters and setting of a story. In spelling we are working on consonant blends with ‘S’. In writing we are learning to write a narrative about our self.

Math: We will finish up our chapter 5 unit with a test on Tuesday. We will then begin our unit on counting and learning about money. A great practice at home is to throw some coins out on the table and have your child identify the value of the coin and even try counting nickel, dimes, and pennies. Its also very important to continue practicing skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. We will continue doing our 5-a-day math practice everyday. This is review questions for students that they work on independently and we will go over together as a class.

Science: We will do dental health month in February.

HELP – This is a request  to all who have taken pictures of our class this year.I would appreciate it if you could put them on a CD and send it to school. This would include all our field trips, as well as the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs and parties. We are in need of pictures for our Yearbook, which is prepared online. Please send by Friday. Many thanks!

Fitness Testing: We have also begun training for our fitness testing. Please be sure to practice sit ups at home. This exercise can be a challenge for many.

We will be studying plants for the next two weeks.  Ask your child what plants need in order to live.  We will make a Garden Goodie book.

We are also growing in hiding God’s Word in our hearts.  This week our verse is “Unless the Lord builds the house, it’s builders labor in vain”, Psalm 127:1.         Our character trait is kindness.  We will begin our “smilebringer” crowns this week.  Each child will have a turn to be honored and affirmed by the class.

Dad’s Day is Friday, February 28.  We hope all dads can come but if not we share! Uncles or Grandpas are welcome if dad can’t come.  Be ready for lots of fun – volcanoes, garden snack, hairy heads, and outdoor games!

Don’t forget the auction is coming up on March 15th. Tickets are going fast!! We made a special class quilt to auction off.  It is “Priceless”!!!! Hope to see a lot of you there!

PARENT CORNER

A VALENTINE THANK YOU!

Thank you for all of the beautiful thoughtful gifts, chocolates, cards, and other goodies showered  upon me this Valentine’s Day.  I feel truly blessed by your outpouring of kindness.  Our Valentine’s Day class party was wonderful!  Thank you to all who were able to join us and to all those who generously provided delightful crafts and goodies.  The children could hardly wait for their party to begin and enjoyed it so much because of you!!

AUCTION

Dear Families,

I trust you had a wonderful three day weekend spending time with friends and family.  After this week we will be  back to the five day school week!!!! We are certainly on the down hill slope of  second grade.  It hardly seems possible that this much time has gone by, but as the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun”, and having fun we ARE!!!

thank youTHANK YOU – We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day.  Our party was lots of fun and the children loved looking at their valentines as well as the hearts with sweet messages from their classmates. Thank you for all who sent goodies for our celebration.

1552-1110-1210-4842LANGUAGE ARTS –   We are working on answering all questions with complete sentences as well as working on the next benchmark in Writing which is a Fictional Narrative.  We will have one of our narratives judged for the Young Author’s competition. Three are chosen and the first place child will have his/her  copy of their story for sale at Open House in May.

books-rowBOOK PROJECT  Second Graders have their next book project due on Friday, February 28th. We will NOT be having a book project for March, rather the children will be working on their speeches and heritage doll.  The speeches will be during the end of March and the beginning of April. You will receive the schedule in their Work Envelope on Tuesday. It was supposed to be in their homework folder, but COMPUTER ISSUES!!!!  All will take place before Easter Vacation.

images-1MATH –  We continue on a unit on Multiplication and Division. They are so enjoying this unit and surprising themselves how easy it is.  We will continue with Division this week. Some children are struggling a bit with this, however, it is a first time exposure and when the children learn all the multiplication facts in third grade, this will be much easier. Because in reality, it is just multiplication in reverse, just as subtraction is adding in reverse. This will serve as a great motivation to really know these facts well. The Chapter Review will come home on Tuesday, Feb.18th, and will be due Tuesday, Feb 25th. We will have our test on that day as well.  In Math drills, Second Graders should be on subtraction to 20 and many are on multiplication.  Good Job!!!

Math imagesFIVE – A DAY –  We began reviewing Math and Language skills in a booklet called Five -A- Day.  There are five problems in both Math and Language for each day of the week.  These are done independently.  The children will circle in red the ones they miss and make the corrections at home. We discuss these together as a class to make make sure we know what the corrections should be.  Please note the kinds of mistakes your child is making as this will be beneficial to you as you work with them. You do not ned to return these to school.

SOCIAL SCIENCE – We are on “People Make a Difference”and Mapping.  We are also be reviewing what country we live in, the state, and the city, as well as the seven continents.

BIBLE – We will study Saul.

HEALTH –  February is Dental Health month. We are learning about good dental hygiene and the proper care of our teeth.

runnersPHYSICAL FITNESS TESTINGThis will take place on March 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th and 19th. It will be in the afternoons. If possible, please try not to schedule appointments for that week.  If it is unavoidable, there certainly will be make-ups.

FCS AUCTION– The FCS auction is underway! This is our largest fundraising event each year. We are excited about setting our goals even higher than last year. The auction is a great way to donate to our school. Your donations will bless the lives of others. You received the information about our class basket which is a “Game Night” theme.  Please start thinking about your gift or donation. BIBLE: We continue our focus on Jesus’ Ministry.

Do Not Worry (due to the short week, students will not be required to write out this memory verse but will be assessed on understanding based on a fill in the blank response.

Matthew 6:25-27  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life
