Mrs. R’s Super Stars February 11th, 2014

Good Morning Parents!

I hope you all had a restful 3 day weekend! This week is a short week but full with learning! Along with our normal schedule we will be celebrating Valentines day on Friday February 14th.

Thank you for all the wonderful conferences we had last week, and I look forward to continuing to work together to help your child!

This week in Mrs. R’s Super Stars:

Bible: This week we will continue to learn about Samuel

Language Arts: This week we will be learning about consonant blends with ‘r’. The students will be working through their spelling books and other activities to practice recognizing and saying words with the ‘r’ blend. Be sure to continue practicing sight words and spelling words each night at home. This will not only aide in expanding their vocabulary as well as assisting them to recognize words during reading. Be sure to continue to read each night with your child. Have them read to you, and challenge them by asking them what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Ask them who the characters were? where did the story take place? was their a problem? If so, how was it solved? Last week I sent home a Scholastic book order form. If you have time, please go online and order books with our class code. Not only will you get books for your child at home, but this earns points for our class and we are able to get free books for our room! In writing we are continuing to write an expository text about our self.

Math: This week we  will be finishing up on chapter 5 and begin to prepare for our test for next week. I will be sending home a chapter review. Our math test will take place on Monday.

Science: February is Dental health month. We will start to learn about the care of our teeth.

Social Science: We will be learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington

ValentinesValentine Day Party: Our class will be celebrating our Valentine’s day party on Friday February 14th. The party will begin at 11:30 with lunch and continue until after lunch. After lunch the kids will be exchanging valentines and participating in crafts and games.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

We are nearing the end of our 2013/14 Box Tops for Education promotion. There are 3 more Fridays left to turn in Box Tops. The last day to hand in Box Tops is Friday, February 14. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize”.

runnersPHYSICAL FITNESS TRAINING – The students have begun preparing in earnest for Physical Fitness Testing which is in March. The requirements for this assessment  will be handed out at conferences. The requirement for each is different, depending on gender and age.

fieldtrpField Trip: We will be taking a class field trip on Friday February 21st, 2014 to the Fresno Air Force Base. One of our own parents, John Gamber, is on the Air Force and will be giving the children a tour. The students will be traveling by bus. The bus will leave People’s church around 8:30am and return around 1:30pm. On this field trip the students are going to be able to experience various parts of  the base such as the maintenance group, where all the air crafts are parked. They will learn how different areas of the maintenance group contribute to making the air craft work. We will also be taking a trip to the Fire Department. It is just like a city fire department. They will have the opportunity to tour the vehicles and other areas that contribute to how the fire department works. Aden’s dad has graciously offered to provided a lunch from 12:00pm-1:00pm on the base. They will be served hot dogs, chips, snack, and a drink (juice/water). There will be no additional cost for this. In the beginning there will more than likely be some security checks prior to entering. At this point we believe it is ok for parents to bring their our car. For those who wish to follow the bus, you will enter though the West Gate which is on McKinley Ave just west of Peach Ave. You cannot miss it. There is a display of all the Wing’s past aircraft and a huge concrete structure. I will continue to communicate as more details arise! This is going to be such an exciting field trip for our little ones!! I can’t wait!!

PARENT CORNER

PARENT CONFERENCES

Thank you for the time spent together during Parent/Teacher Conference Week.  It was very helpful to connect, listen to you share your thoughts and insights, learn more about your family, celebrate progress, and set new goals together.  I appreciate your support, prayers,  and encouragement in this journey of education together with your child.

  VALENTINE’S DAY

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!  The third graders are learning about the greatest command Jesus gave us: to love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor (your study buddy sitting beside you) as much as you love yourself.  Our devotions this week will focus around what it means to be a loyal friend and  love at  all times by knowing, liking, and accepting another person the way God made them.

MEMORY BOOK

This is a request  to all who have taken pictures of our class this year.  I would appreciate it if you could put them on a CD and send it to school. This would include all our field trips,  Christmas program, and parties.  We are in need of pictures for our Yearbook, which is prepared online. Many thanks!

SCIENCE

This week we have a science homework assignment to do as a family.  You will find it in your Red Folder along with your weekly math homework.  It is called “Lesson 5:  Breakfast Blast!”  There is a student activity along with a family activity.  Please return the assignment on Thursday along with your other work in your Red Homework Folder.

With preparation for Physical Fitness Testing we will focus on Lesson 7 this week entitled:  “Get Ready, Get Set, Get Moving!” along with Lesson 8 “Label Language” and food labels.

WRITING

In writing we are learning to write fictional narratives using sample prompts,  cluster charts to brainstorm characters and settings, story maps to plan the beginning, middle, and ending, color code our descriptive words, dialogue, similes, and peer conference in pairs to revise and improve our rough drafts.

READING

This week we will focus on the comprehension skill of story structure with elements of main characters, setting, plot, problem, what happens, and ending.  We will also study the comprehension skill of making judgements and decisions.

READING COUNTS

For students who have read non-RED STAR books, you are able to get credit for reading those books toward your Blue, Red, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates.  Here are the requirements:

1)  You must complete the STORY ELEMENTS CHART book report.

2)  Record the number of pages in the length of the book.

3)  Also record the lexile level if given inside the cover of the book.

4)  Return the book report along with the book to school for credit.

I have included a copy of the “STORY ELEMENTS CHART” in your newsletter this week.  You may obtain future copies at school in a basket for students.

MATH

We continue our study of our multiplication fact families.  Check to see where your child is.  This week we will introduce the factor family of 6:

6 x 0 = 0

6 x 1 = 6

6 x 2 = 12

6 x 3 = 18

6 x 4 = 24

6 x 5 = 30

6 x 6 = 36

6 x 7 = 42

6 x 8 = 48

6 x 9 = 54

6 x 10 = 60

BOX TOP COLLECTIONS

Our final Box Top Drawing is this  Friday, February 14.   Your class participation has been  FANTASTIC!!!  The class with the most box tops at each campus will win a prize so let’s give our very best this week and remember to turn in those  BOX TOPS as a fundraising effort to help FCS!!!!!

FCS AUCTION

The FCS auction is underway!  This is our largest fundraising event each year.  We are excited about setting our goals even higher than last year.  The auction is a great way to donate to our school.  Your donations will bless the lives of others.

You received the information about our class basket which is a “Beach” theme.  Please start thinking about your gift or donation.  We are asking each child’s family to contact family, friends, neighbors, and merchants to make a donation to our auction.  Students will be given a ticket for every 10 points they earn in donations.  I am hoping that each family will find that special something to donate to the auction.

I would like to encourage you to support this event by giving or getting donations of services, trips, items, desserts, and/or dinner tickets.  The dinner/silent and live auction will take place  on Saturday, March 15th, from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the FCS Gym.

 SPIRIT DAYS

Just a a reminder that every Friday is SPIRIT DAY at Fresno Christian.  Wear your school pride and let’s give  the Spirit Trophy  along with Baldwin, our school mascot Eagle a proud home in our classroom for a WHOLE MONTH!  We need 4 weeks in a row of 100% to win!!  WE ARE ONE AND WE CAN DO IT!!!

Dear Parents,                                    February 10, 2014

Don’t forget the Red, White and Blue Program THIS FRIDAY at 9:00 a.m. Please invite all your friends!! It’s a GREAT show! Our Valentine’s party will be right after recess (10:15).  PLEASE dress your child in RED, WHITE and BLUE.  Thank you!

Our teacher is very proud of us.  We are learning so much at this time of year.  We are growing strong.  We are even practicing running.  What a challenge!  Please have your child wear his or her fastest tennis shoes for the next few weeks.  The girls need shorts under their dresses for stretching exercises.

This week we are making a “storm” book and learning about the water cycle.

Many of us are really growing in math knowledge.  Most of us can count to 100 by ones without help.  We are also learning how to count by tens.  In reading we are blending sounds together to make words. We are also writing words and sentences.

Our character trait is friendship. Our Bible verse is “Teach me your ways so I may know you”. Exodus 33:13.  Please continue to send us notes demonstrating how your child is allowing Christ to develop His character in your child.  We will be writing “smilebringer” crowns in a few weeks.  Each child will have a turn to be honored and affirmed by the class.

The Fresno Christian Auction is just around the corner  (Saturday, March 15).  Be sure and order your tickets/tables as soon as possible.  Tickets are going fast!  Also remember, WE NEED YOUR DONATIONS!  Popular auction items include: boutique items, collectibles, vacation packages, jewelry, art, tools, dinner packages, professional services, electronics, garden supplies, gift certificates, etc.  Turn in the forms with your donation (or clearly mark auction donation) and our class will get credits towards a party. You may get these from Mrs. Roberts.  Our class quilt will be for sale at the auction.

FIVE – A DAY –  We will begin reviewing Math and Language skills in a booklet called  Five -A- Day.  There are five problems in both Math and Language for each day of the week.  These are done independently.  The children will circle in red the ones they miss and correct them.  We discuss these together as a class to make our corrections.  Please note the kinds of mistakes your child is making as this will be beneficial to you as you work with them.  You will see the first Five-A Day in the envelopes on Feb.18th.

Happy Monday families! February is here! I hope you all had a restful weekend. We had an exciting week last week with the State of the School Address on Monday evening, and our student finalist poem readings on Tuesday morning. I want to give a big congratulations to Jacob Pimentel for being one of the 10 students chosen to represent Fresno Christian at the Peach Blossom Festival!! We are so excited!!! All the kids did such a wonderful job getting up in front of their peers and parents. That shows such confidence and bravery! This week will be a quick week due to parent conference week.

conferences  conferences: This week will be an early release day everyday due to parent teacher conferences. I look forward to speaking with everyone!

Language Arts:  After re-assessing the class I really want to focus on reading comprehension this week during our guided reading groups. Please be sure to continue practicing the sight words that come home every week. The faster they can recognize these words the easier reading will become. In writing we will also begin focusing on writing about oneself.

Math imagesMath: This week we will continue our work through Chapter 5 of Number Patterns. We will also be doing little review with telling time. I will start having students look at the clock more often to monitor their schedule throughout the day.

fieldtrpField Trip: We will be taking a class field trip on Friday February 21st, 2014 to the Fresno Air Force Base.

This Friday the elementary student council has made it a red, white, and blue day in honor of the upcoming olympics. Students from the upper grades will be coming by our room to ask the kiddos questions in regards to the olympics. Show our support for the USA olympic athletes by wearing American colors!

All parents and grandparents are cordially invited.  The program will last about 30 minutes.  Please dress your child in patriotic colors if possible.  Blue denim is fine too.  Don’t go out and buy a new outfit; this is just a fun and educational way to celebrate our beloved U.S.A.  After the show we will have recess and then continue the fun with our Valentine Party. Thank you for all your support in helping with our “special” days!  Don’t forget your camera!

Our Bible verse this week is “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness”,  Matthew 6:33. The character trait is Friendship.

We really need you from 8:00 – 9:30… but you can stay all morning if you want to!! We realize that it is difficult to take time off, and if you can’t rearrange your schedule, we understand.  We will also convey that to the children and “spread the dads around” to cover everyone in our class.

Please start thinking about your gift or donation. We are asking each child’s family to contact family, friends, neighbors, and merchants to make a donation to our auction.  Students will earn a minimum of 10 points for each donation.  Our class is working as “ONE” team to reach goals of class rewards including juice bars,  a private recess with treats,  lunch party and more as we climb the FCS Auction thermometer chart in the hallway with our donations.

I am hoping that each family will find that special something to donate to the auction.  I would like to encourage you to support this event by giving or getting donations of services, trips, items, desserts, and/or dinner tickets.  The dinner/silent and live auction will take place Saturday, March 16, from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the FCS Gym.
