END OF YEAR CONVOCATION– As the year draws to a close we would like to gather as a family to celebrate all that God has done for us. Thursday, May 1st is the National Day of Prayer and our School Community Council believes that would be the perfect day to come together as an entire school. All of you (parents, grandparents, family, and friends) are invited to join the teachers, students, administration, and staff as we gather together for this ending convocation held in the Peoples’ Church sanctuary. It is a time of celebration, worship, and prayer as we end our year with thanksgiving and praise. The service begins at 8:00 am and will end by 8:30. All students K-12 are to report directly to the sanctuary by 7:55 AM. Every class will be designated with a sign and balloons, making it easy to locate your child’s class. It is exactly the same as our opening convocation seating arrangement. You are welcome to sit with your student in their designated area or if you have more than one student attending Fresno Christian, choose where you would like to sit.I look forward to seeing all of you at this closing event as we end our year acknowledging God’s hand upon us through prayer, worship, and heartfelt celebration.

Dear Families,

Daylight Savings has arrived!  Hooray, for more daylight hours to enjoy time outside. We had a wonderful time last week turning our bulletin boards into Spring themes. That means we are more than ready for the new season, which is just around the corner.  Bye, bye winter!  YEAH!!!! As the warmer weather arrives, please send a water bottle with your child each day. We will take drinks many times throughout the day in order to stay hydrated. Thanks! This is benchmark assessment week. The children will have assessments in Math, Writing and some in Reading.

LANGUAGE ARTS –   All groups have started the literature study,  Andi’s Indian Summer. They are enjoying the comprehension packets because they are much easier than what they have previously done.  But alas, I continue to throw in the more challenging packets, just to keep them on the tips of their toes. By now they should all be good ballet dancers!!!  Our fictional narrative  benchmark assessment will also take place this week.

Math imagesMATH –  We continue on  Numbers and Patterns to 1000. This is a real good exercise for Number Sense. Some have that well developed and others developmentally are not completely there. It comes with time for most.We will continue to revisit multiplication and division as not everyone has mastered this. This will be revisited and expounded upon greatly in 3rd grade. The chapter review for both grades will come home on Wednesday, March 12th. Our test will be Wednesday, March 19th. We will take our 3rd quarter benchmark assessment in Math this week as well.

FIVE – A DAY –   We will make the corrections at school, but  please go over at home the kinds of mistakes your child is making. You will know they made a mistake if the number beside the problem is circled in red. You do not need to send it back.

SOCIAL SCIENCE –   In our book we are on ,”People Make a Difference”. We will continue on this through  the month of March. We will take a test on this chapter when we complete it.  The chapter review will come home about a week before our test.  We will review at school as well.

bible_solomonBIBLE – We will study Solomon.

HOMEWORK – There will be no skill sheets or Book Project for the month of March. The requirement for the Reading Log will still be 100 minutes per week.  They will be working on their speech and heritage doll which will keep them plenty busy!!! Speeches will be scheduled for March 24-April 3.. The children may dress in costume if they wish and bring a food that represents their country. These suggestions are optional and not a requirement. These are done at 1:45 PM, and we will do three a day. If the time I have chosen for you does not work, just let me know and we will reschedule. The last Book Project will be a Diorama (the requirements of which will come home Friday in the Homework Folder) and will be due the morning of Tuesday, May 6th, in time for our Elementary Fine Arts Festival.

runnersPHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING – We have completed part of the activities last week.  Those left are on March 12th (Sit and Reach), 14th (Pull-Ups) and 19th Shuttle Run). It will be in the afternoons. If possible, please try not to schedule appointments for that week.  If it is unavoidable, there certainly will be make-ups. Also, please have your child in appropriate clothing and footwear (tennis shoes) for these activities.

easter-lettering1EASTER CELEBRATION – We will have a celebration on Friday, April 11th at 1:20 PM.  There will be a sign-up in a couple of weeks on the wall outside our classroom for the items needed at our party.  In addition, each child will bring 12 filled plastic, easter eggs. They can be filled with candy, stickers, erasers or whatever else you choose. Anything goes!!!!  These will be hidden outside for an egg hunt at our party!!

NEATNESS –  We are focusing on making our work neat. I am pointing out to the children samples of neat work.  We are doing lots of encouragement in this area. We will be redoing those papers which are sloppy.  I appreciate your support in this area as we together emphasize how important neat and careful work is. Many thanks!

FCS AUCTION– The FCS auction is underway!  The dinner/silent and live auction will take place on Saturday, March 15th  from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the FCS Gym.  Our class project is a gift basket for a Game Night. We are still in need of more games. You can check the ” Thermometer” in the hallway of Building 5 to see how we are doing with donations. We are doing well, but we sure could use some more contributions from our class. Many Thanks!

Dear Families,

I trust you had a wonderful three day weekend spending time with friends and family.  After this week we will be  back to the five day school week!!!! We are certainly on the down hill slope of  second grade.  It hardly seems possible that this much time has gone by, but as the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun”, and having fun we ARE!!!

thank youTHANK YOU – We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day.  Our party was lots of fun and the children loved looking at their valentines as well as the hearts with sweet messages from their classmates. Thank you for all who sent goodies for our celebration.

1552-1110-1210-4842LANGUAGE ARTS –   We are working on answering all questions with complete sentences as well as working on the next benchmark in Writing which is a Fictional Narrative.  We will have one of our narratives judged for the Young Author’s competition. Three are chosen and the first place child will have his/her  copy of their story for sale at Open House in May.

books-rowBOOK PROJECT  Second Graders have their next book project due on Friday, February 28th. We will NOT be having a book project for March, rather the children will be working on their speeches and heritage doll.  The speeches will be during the end of March and the beginning of April. You will receive the schedule in their Work Envelope on Tuesday. It was supposed to be in their homework folder, but COMPUTER ISSUES!!!!  All will take place before Easter Vacation.

images-1MATH –  We continue on a unit on Multiplication and Division. They are so enjoying this unit and surprising themselves how easy it is.  We will continue with Division this week. Some children are struggling a bit with this, however, it is a first time exposure and when the children learn all the multiplication facts in third grade, this will be much easier. Because in reality, it is just multiplication in reverse, just as subtraction is adding in reverse. This will serve as a great motivation to really know these facts well. The Chapter Review will come home on Tuesday, Feb.18th, and will be due Tuesday, Feb 25th. We will have our test on that day as well.  In Math drills, Second Graders should be on subtraction to 20 and many are on multiplication.  Good Job!!!

Math imagesFIVE – A DAY –  We began reviewing Math and Language skills in a booklet called Five -A- Day.  There are five problems in both Math and Language for each day of the week.  These are done independently.  The children will circle in red the ones they miss and make the corrections at home. We discuss these together as a class to make make sure we know what the corrections should be.  Please note the kinds of mistakes your child is making as this will be beneficial to you as you work with them. You do not ned to return these to school.

SOCIAL SCIENCE – We are on “People Make a Difference”and Mapping.  We are also be reviewing what country we live in, the state, and the city, as well as the seven continents.

BIBLE – We will study Saul.

HEALTH –  February is Dental Health month. We are learning about good dental hygiene and the proper care of our teeth.

runnersPHYSICAL FITNESS TESTINGThis will take place on March 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th and 19th. It will be in the afternoons. If possible, please try not to schedule appointments for that week.  If it is unavoidable, there certainly will be make-ups.

Dear Families,

Thank you for the wonderful conferences.  It’s exciting to partner with you, educating your child to become a life long learner who will  love God, and further His Kingdom!

images-18HELP – This is a request  to all who have taken pictures of our class this year.I would appreciate it if you could put them on a CD and send it to school. This would include all our field trips, as well as the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs and parties. We are in need of pictures for our Yearbook, which is prepared online. Many thanks!

books-rowLANGUAGE ARTS   As you read with your child, ask them what is happening at the beginning, middle and the end of the story, as well as the characters, setting, problem and solution in their stories. We will be doing comprehension questions with our study of George Washington, looking for details in our text.

HERITAGE DOLL AND SPEECH INFO –  The paper for writing their speech was in the homework folder on February 7th. You  will be receiving a schedule for speeches in the homework folder on February 14th.  They will be in March. This will take the place of a book project for the month of March. If you did not get the info for this project, please stop by the room and I will give it to you.  Not everyone got away from the conference with one.

BIBLE – We will continue with our study of Samuel.

mathMATH –We  continue on Multiplication and Division. They are so enjoying this unit and surprising themselves how easy  multiplication seems. Some started division this week and that kind of took the wind out of their sails!!! Knowing the multiplication facts of 2’s, 3’s, and 5’s is really helpful.  We will continue with this concept this week as well.  Please check your child’s work for accuracy.

FIVE – A DAY –  We will begin reviewing Math and Language skills in a booklet called  Five -A- Day.  There are five problems in both Math and Language for each day of the week.  These are done independently.  The children will circle in red the ones they miss and correct them.  We discuss these together as a class to make our corrections.  Please note the kinds of mistakes your child is making as this will be beneficial to you as you work with them.  You will see the first Five-A Day in the envelopes on Feb.18th.

SOCIAL SCIENCE –  We are  learning what country we live in, the state, and the city, as well as the seven continents. We have begun,”People Make a Difference” in our Social Studies book.  We will also focus on the contributions of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington this month..

SCIENCE –  February is Dental Health month.  We will do a unit on”The Care of Our Teeth,” beginning Feb.18th.

bear-love-transparentVALENTINE’S PARTY –  We will celebrate on Thursday, Feb. 14th.  Our party will be from 1:20 – 2:40. The children will exchange valentines with one another. Thank you to those who have signed up to bring something for our party.

PEPHYSICAL FITNESS TRAINING – We have begun preparing in earnest for our Physical Fitness Testing which will take place in March.

Dear Families,

Last Friday was wonderful for the children.  They so enjoyed saying their poems.  It was really hard for Miss Nolte to choose who would participate in the Assembly on Monday. Everybody did a great job.  Congratulations to the finalists who were chosen.

LANGUAGE ARTS     In reading groups we will continue working on comprehension. Our poetry project is due on Friday, January 31st.  I will keep them to display at Open House. You received the Rubric for our next book report which is due on Friday, Feb. 28th. Your child may choose any book . In writing we are working on fictional narratives..

Math imagesMATH    We will begin a chapter on Multiplication and Division Hee- Haw….they are growing up fast!!!!! They are quite proud of themselves for attacking this chapter, which they think is “hard math”. I will keep for conferencing the math tests taken on Thursday.  You may go on Power School to check how your child did, as I have entered their scores.

BIBLE – We will be studying Samson.

HEALTH– We will complete our unit on Nutrition this week.  You probably have some food patrols around the house now letting everybody know when what is being consumed is not healthy!!!  Please send a magazine with your child for categorizing the food groups.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will have their second Social Science Test on Thursday, January 30th. The Chapter Review is also due that day. We will be reviewing at school as well.  In third grade, a test is taken at the end of every chapter, so we are preparing for that transition. This review came home in the homework folder on Friday. So when your child told you there is only a Reading Log for this week, that was correct information.  Some were concerned that mom wouldn’t believe them!!!!

you-rock-heartthFUNDRAISER  – The Fundraiser comes to an end on Friday, January 31st. Please turn in your money in the envelope enclosed to Mrs. Howard. The student’s name and teacher need to be written on the envelope. Many thanks for all your work in making this a very successful fundraiser.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION – We are nearing the end of our 2013/14 Box Tops for Education promotion. There are 3 more Fridays left to turn in Box Tops. The last day to hand in Box Tops is Friday, February 14. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize”. Below are the totals collected per class so far:

Reminder: In preparation for the party please bring a shoe box with your name on it by Friday, January 31st. Thanks so much!

LEARNING RESPONSIBILITY – We did better last Friday, however, some are still forgetting work envelopes and homework folders, which are due every Friday. We have spent a great deal of time talking about this and coming up with ways to help us become more responsible. Any support you can give in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help in creating responsible students.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES –  Elementary conferences are scheduled for the week of  Feb. 4-7. School is dismissed at 12:00 PM each day during that week. FCSlogoSTATE OF THE SCHOOL ADDRESS – Superintendent Debbie Siebert will hold the fifth annual State of the School Address on January 27th at 7:00 PM in the G.L. Johnson Chapel.  As a school community it is beneficial for everyone involved to have a clear understanding of how well we are meeting the mission of Fresno Christian Schools. Along with reporting on  the school program Mrs. Siebert will present information regarding the financial picture of our school. As we work together to strengthen Fresno Christian the more information we have about all aspects of the program the more effective our unified efforts will be.

PEPHYSICAL FITNESS TRAINING – We have begun preparing in earnest for our Physical Fitness Testing which is in March. The requirements for this assessment  will be handed out at conferences. The requirement for each is different, depending on gender and age.

PEACH BLOSSOM –  All of the presentations were wonderful. Congratulations to Sanjay Stephen, Bella Beal, Ryleigh Chavez and Tryphena Gunawan who were chosen to represent our classroom at the Peach Blossom Assembly on Monday, Jan. 27th, at 12:30 PM.  It will be held in the North Lobby Chapel.  All are welcome to attend.
