Dear Families,

thank you

We had a wonderful beginning to our second piece of  second grade pie. We will finish up pumpkins this week and then quickly turn our attention to Pilgrims and preparing for our Thanksgiving Program. Yikes!!!! Where is the time going ??? We have so much to celebrate in the next seven weeks!  What fun!!!

images booksLanguage Arts –   We continue to work on comprehension type activities.  This has proven very challenging for some. When your child is reading at home, be sure and ask him/her what the story is about with supporting details. The problem and solution should also be known as well as a description of the characters.

1552-1110-1210-4842Writing –  They did an excellent job on the first quarter writing assessment.  We now turn our attention to writing  a narraative about a personal experience, incorporating descriptive words in the piece.

books-rowBook Report – The Book Project for October is due on Friday, October 25th. Please pay close attention to the rubric and what is required for this project. I will give construction paper when your child is ready, however, they need to ask for it so they can pick the color they want.

images-1Math–  We continue with the chapter on regrouping. This type of work was in the Homework Folder on Friday. This should give the kids extra practice, so this skill can be automated.

img_173cScience -We are enjoying our study of Pumpkins and Harvest. We are working on our sequencing book about pumpkins  and we will have an assessment on the growth of a pumpkin. .

Social Science –  We  are on”Using Our Resources” both natural and man-made. We are learning that God wants us to be good stewards of what He has created and given us.

Bible We will be studying the Israelite’s Exodus from Egypt.

imagesField Trip – We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. 24th.  We will learn about the growth of pumpkins, see farm animals, take a tractor pulled hay ride, do a  hay and corn maze and pick a large pumpkin from the vine.  The chaperones will cut the pumpkins off the vine for the children. We will be riding the bus, leaving at 10:30 AM and returning by 2:00 PM.  We will have lunch there at the farm.  The children have already paid and the chaperones are free.  If a chaperone wants to pick a pumpkin to take home the cost will be $5.00. If you do not work in the classroom, please stop by the room or the elementary office to sign a waiver from the farm.  Thanks!.

PTF Reward  – Our class was the highest selling class for the fundraiser.  Our reward will be a movie and popcorn bar with other treats as well.  This will take place on October 31st.  Please sign and return the permission slip from PTF for your child to watch the movie Croods. This permission slip will be in the Work Envelope on Monday. It should be a great afternoon.

occ_pack_02Operation Christmas Child  – Please consider taking the opportunity to show your child the true spirit of giving at Christmas. Pack a shoe box with your child to send to needy children throughout the world. The children have lists of the suggested items, many of which can be purchased at a Dollar Store  at reasonable prices. Please be sure to put in only brand new items and include small toys ( no weapons), school supplies, stuffed animals and hygiene  items.  Most important is to pray over the box and for the child who will receive it.  For more suggestions or to download a new form to go with the box, go to samaritanspurse.org.  Boxes are in the office, however, they suggested how wonderful a plastic box would be, which you can get at Dollar Store because they use it to get water at the river and for putting vegetables and fruits in from their garden.  Also, include $7 in an envelope for shipping and handling. The deadline is Nov. 7th.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B.  Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book – It Program – The first Book-It form is due on November 1st.

School_Clip_Art_151Library Our class goes to the library every Monday.  The children can check out one book if they have brought back their library book from the previous week. They should have only one book out at a time.  Last week your child brought home a library notice that shows what books your child has checked out. Please look and find those books and return if they are overdue.

Dear Families,

Welcome Monday!!!  It is hard to imagine that this month is almost half over!!!! October 14th starts the first day of our second piece of second grade pie, or known better by others as the second quarter!!!  You will notice much growth in your child’s skills during these next couple of months. We are working on becoming responsible, confident learners. The children are so proud of what they can already do and they look forward to all the new things to learn.  I am very proud of them and I know you are also.

images-1Language Arts –Writing – We did a friendly letter for the first assessment, incorporating all the elements of a good sentence. They had to write about their teacher!!!!!! This next quarter we will be learning how to write a  personal narrative.     Reading – We continue to work on comprehension, both stated and inferred. Inferential comprehension  is extremely challenging for some. We will be working on this throughout the year. There is so much language processing involved in this activity.  As the children move up in the grades, this skill is so very important.

images-12Math – We are in the chapter on re-grouping. This is challenging for some. Reviewing the work when it comes home will be very helpful. Please keep the family letter from each chapter, as it has the vocabulary words that are  introduced. Congratulations to our new Math Club members; certificates will be forthcoming!!! Several others are nipping at their heels…….almost there!!!

fall-pumpkins-and-leavesScience -Our theme for October will be Pumpkins and Harvest.  We will learn what pumpkins need to grow and all the many different things you can do with a pumpkin. We are excited to learn new things on our field trip as well. We will integrate this into our  Math and writing as well. We have begun a writing book on sequencing the growth of a pumpkin.

Social Science – We are on the chapter “Using Our Resources” both natural and man-made. We are learning that God wants us to be good stewards of what He has created and given us.

burn-bushBible – We will be studying Moses and how God used him in leading the Israelites. We will also learn that his disobedience is what kept him out of the Promised Land.

Show and Tell – This week is Team A.   Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.  If a child has not completed work for that day, show and tell is forfeited.

Homework Folder –  Folders are due due every Friday. There are usually skill sheets and always a reading log due.  This week’s homework has practice in regrouping in Math.  Please check your child’s work before it is returned to make sure understanding is happening.

images-2Report Cards – Report cards will go home on Thursday, Oct 17th. At this stage of development , a letter grade of P which means progressing, is very acceptable in academic areas. If they knew everything at a satisfactory or excellent level in this stage of the game, I would be out of a job!!!!! However, the N’s in Character Development or Homework are not. Your report card will say “Needs More Time”, but at Second Grade, unlike K or First, that now means “Needs Improvement”.

Book – It Program – The first Book-It form is due on November 1st. You just need to color in the pumpkins after your child has read.  Each pumpkin stands for 20 minutes and 12 is required to get a certificate.  You are actually reading 20, 20 minute sessions a month!

autm9Fall Festival  Our fall festival this year will take place on October 19th from 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM on the North Field.   Bring your blanket or chairs and come enjoy the food and fun!  This is a great time for family and friend’s fun!

occ_pack_02Operation Christmas Child -Operation Christmas Child brought smiles to the faces of 100 million poor, sick and suffering children in more than 100 countries last year through shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and other small gifts.  But these boys and girls received something even more important than a Christmas present.  They also leaned about the greatest gift of all—God’s son, Jesus Christ.

Each year, Operation Christmas Child delivers millions of shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances around the world.  In addition to bringing happiness to boys and girls who other wise wouldn’t receive any presents, this exciting project of Samaritan’s Purse also opens doors for presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Through children’s literature and evangelistic programs, many lives are changed for eternity. We would like to invite you to join us this year as we again reach out to boys and girls in the name of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to collect 250 shoeboxes at Fresno Christian Elementary by November 7th for children who face a daily struggle against war, persecution, disease, natural disaster, poverty, illness, or neglect.  Pray that God will meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

fieldtrpField Trip – We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. 24th.  We will learn about the growth of pumpkins, see farm animals, take a tractor pulled hay ride, do a  hay and corn maze and pick a large pumpkin from the vine.  The chaperones will cut the pumpkins off the vine for the children. Basket-of-fall-veggies

Dear Families,

thank youThank you for all of your contributions of apple treats and a shout out to Jen Alberta for bringing an apple treat Mon-Wed.  We sampled all of the apple treats and graphed our results. Hands down, apple fritters won!!  Cheers to all the healthy food fanatics in Room 524!!!!  NOT!!!! Bobbing for apples was a blast as well.!!!!!! Thank you for everyone who helped make this a very fun day for the kids.

Picture Re-Takes – On Tuesday, October 8th,  the photographer will be back one last time for any students who were absent, not satisfied with their original purchased package, or did not get to purchase on Picture Day.  If you are retaking an original order, you must return your complete picture package to be  be photographed.  No retakes for CD orders.  Pictures will be taken for school records, yearbook, and portrait package.  Order forms are available in the School Office. (North Star Photography (559) 276-1692)

AGreat_Job_clip_artFundraiser Pick-Up– The Fall Fundraiser was a terrific success. Thank you for all your hard work. You can pick up the  items that you sold on Thursday, October 10th from 2:30-5:30. The location will be behind Building 5. Please be sure to make appropriate plans as there is no space to put the items not picked-up.  Many Thanks!!!   Also, our class was the highest selling class and we will have a popcorn and movie afternoon.  We will have a popcorn bar with many flavors to choose from.  The movie we will be watching is Crood.  A permission slip will go home that needs to be signed in order for your child to watch the movie. It will be a very fun afternoon. The date is October 31st.

thumbnail-4Language Arts – We continue to work on Leveled Readers as well as our Anthology Book.  Many are rushing through their seat work and in particular, comprehension. Some are not even reading the story or information that applies to the questions.  We have talked at length about being a careful reader.  When you are reading at home, please quiz your child about what they are reading by asking who, what, why and when questions, as well as the setting, problem and solution. Have them list the characters and their significance in the story.  We continue to work hard on this as well at school.

Writing – We will have our first writing benchmark this week. This is an Elementary School wide assessment. We have been practicing different prompts to get us ready for this.  We will be writing a Friendly Letter.  A good score will have proper form with a beginning, middle and closing. They will also be scored on correct capitals and punctuation.

apple_and_slateboardMath -We will finish Chapter 3. We will take our test on October 10th. The chapter review is also due on that day. Our next chapter is on regrouping.  This will be challenging for some, but we will be continuing to revisit this skill ALL year long. Friday’s homework folder will also be Math for the next couple of weeks.  Please continue being faithful in doing Math Drills .

Social Science -We  will continue with “Using Our Resources”. We have had some interesting discussions about how we care for the things God has blessed us with.

fall_clipart_04Science – Our theme for October will be Pumpkins and Harvest.  We will learn what pumpkins need to grow and the many different things you can do with a pumpkin. We will integrate this into our Math and writing as well.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B. Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Book Bags and Work Envelopes – Just a reminder that book bags and work envelopes are due every Friday.  Please assist your child in being responsible to return both ON TIME. Imagine that!!!

Bible – We will be continue with Joseph and learn about the power of forgiveness.

clipart-bookwormABook – It Program — The form for this program will be in the work envelope on Monday. Please just record from your child’s Reading Log 12 different times during the month.  I know they are reading chapter books and certainly 12 would not be expected in a month. Just record 12, 20 min.reading times.  Your child may only earn one certificate each month. You cannot stockpile these certificates as they expire 30 days after they are issued. Thank you for your participation! The first Book-It form is due on November 1st.

Book Report -We will begin reading a Biography  for the next book project. The book should be at least 80-100 pages. If you are not sure if the length is ok, just bring it in and I will take a look. These books are meant to be something other than an easy picture book.  I will have some biographies for them to choose from if you don’t go to the library, or have a biography on hand. Just let me know when you are ready for the construction paper.

School_Clip_Art_151Book Order – You had book pamphlets in your envelope last week. The book order will be submitted on Oct. 14th.  Please be sure you have ordered by then if you are interested. You will  order and pay online.  You will have many more options than what is in your child’s grade level pamphlet. It is a very easy site to navigate. There are also free perks when you order online. Our class activation code is J4ZNG.

images-5Operation Christmas Child  -We will have a chapel on Tuesday with Mrs. Lazo explaining this wonderful ministry. Please consider taking the opportunity to show your child the true spirit of giving at Christmas. Pack a shoe box with your child to send to needy children throughout the world. The children will get lists of the suggested items on Monday, many of which can be purchased at a Dollar Store  at reasonable prices. Also, include $7 in an envelope for shipping and handling.

fall_clipart_01Fall Festival – Our fall festival this year will take place on October 19th from 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM on the North Field.   Bring your blanket or chairs and come enjoy the food and fun!  This is a great time for family and friend’s fun! There is no charge, however, there will be a donation bucket at the entrance if you want to help with expenses. This certainly is not mandatory.

images-3Field Trip – We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. The children have already paid and the chaperones are free  If a chaperone wants to pick a pumpkin to take home the cost will be $5.00.

Absences –   The flu season is coming!!! If  your child is sick or gone for more than one day, please call our office (292-7704) and come by the school to pick up your child’s missed work.  If your child is gone only one day, I will send  the missed work home  on the day he/she returns.  I can also put the work on the bus up to People’s Campus if you wish.  Just let me know. Also, if your child is leaving school early and you know ahead of time,  please email me or send me a note so I can be sure your child has everything that is needed. This will be really helpful.  I understand  there are emergencies where this is not possible.

Elementary Cheer Clinic – This week the elementary cheer clinic will begin! Practice will be on the North field grass from 3:30-4:30. The girls will be learning cheers, a dance, and stunting!!! The girls will get their shirts on Thursday for Friday night’s game. Please do not have your daughter wear her clinic shirt to school on Friday.

Dear Families,

Fall has arrived!!! What a beautiful season of the year…..my favorite!!!!!  Now, if only the temperature would cooperate, we would be in business. We are looking forward to October in Room 524.  The first quarter is coming to a close  and the children are adjusting well . So much progress has already been made and you  will be excited to see your child’s growth at conference time. I look forward to sharing with you this week.

Apple with booksLanguage Arts –  We are working on topic sentences and identifying supporting details. Comprehension now is not just basic facts, but inferring from the text the hidden meaning.  This is challenging for some, however, this is the kind of comprehension that comprises more of our work now, as we move along in second grade.

images-12Math – Our Math Test on Chapter 2 will be Tuesday, Sept 24th.. We will then be on Data and Graphing. Be sure to keep the family letter for each chapter, as it has the vocabulary words that are  introduced in each chapter. Please continue being faithful in doing Math Drills as well. One four minute drill an evening is plenty and if consistent you will see the pay off.  When Math facts are memorized it just makes work in our contract so much smoother and more easily mastered.

basket-of-applesScience – We will be completing our apple unit next week. On Thursday, Oct 3rd, we will culminate our study with an apple tasting activity.  We will also bob for apples.  Many of the children did not know what this was. It will be lots of fun!!!!  Please sign up outside our door if you can provide any apple items for us to taste. We will graph our results.

Social Science We wil have our first test on Wednesday, September 25th.  The chapter review that went hone on Wednesday, September 18th will be due on that day as well.  Please help your child study using the chapter review.

Bible –  We will be studying Jacob.

Show and Tell – This week is Team B.  Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

school_bagHomework Folders and Work Envelopes – Please assist your child in being responsible to return both on time, which is by Friday of each week.

Homework  Folder  Because of a Math test and Social Science test this week, there were no skill sheets in the Homework Folder on Friday, Sept. 20th. The chapter reviews for both of these will take the place of their normal skill sheets. Our first book project is due Friday, September 27th.   On that day also, the children will bring home in their homework folder the requirements and due date for their 2nd project which will be October 25th. Work Envelopes  will NOT be coming home on Monday. You will see your child’s work during conferences this week.

Dot Day -In honor of International Dot Day, and celebrating creativity and encouragement at FCS, Student Council has elected to make Friday, Sept. 27, spirit day clothing as “DOTS”! In lieu of the FCS spirit shirt, please wear clothing with dots:  shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, bows.

Mrs. Tally September 16, 2013

heading-007Dear Families,

Welcome Monday!!!!  Last week was a very busy time in Room 524 for Tally’s Treasures. We have divided our year into a pie with four pieces and discovered  this week that one half of the first piece of second  grade pie is already over.OH MY!!!! Time flies when you’re having fun, and we ARE!!  Grandparent’s Day was wonderful and hopefully, all the Grandparents had as much fun as we did. It was so wonderful watching the interactions between grandparents and grandchildren.

images-1Language Arts –   We continue to talk about the setting and characters of the story. Mrs. King is doing a great job on Word Builders each day and I can already see the children applying these phonetic strategies during our reading groups and classroom reading. Going over Word Builders at home a couple times a week will be very helpful. Remember these words only need to be blended and read, not spelled. We are still defining all the elements of a story: characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle and end.

apple_and_slateboardMath –  This has been a challenging chapter for some, which is the foundation for regrouping. The chapter review will come home on Monday, Sept. 16th and will be due on Wed. Sept 24th. Please continue being faithful in doing Math Drills.  One four minute drill an evening is plenty, and if consistent you will see the pay off. When Math facts are memorized it just makes work in our contract so much smoother and more easily mastered.

Social Science – We are nearing the end of the chapter, Land Around Us, which will also be completed this week. The chapter review will come home on Thursday, Sept 19th.  Our first Social Science test will be on Wed. Sept 25th.

appleScience – The children are enjoying the study of apples. We are working on an apple book as well. We are also learning what the different parts of the apple are called. The children will need to be able to label the parts of an apple as well as sequence the life cycle of  an apple tree. We have watched a video on how Washington apples get from the orchard to the grocery store. It is quite a process!!

Bible -. We will be studying Isaac – God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah. We will learn that God ALWAYS keeps his promises.

Character Building WE CONTINUE TO WORK HARD on first time obedience in our classroom. This has been a real struggle for so many in our midst. Following the rules which we laid out in our Care Agreement, is very challenging.  We have some very independent spirits,  but we are working together to encourage and support one another in becoming obedient followers of Jesus who use good self control. We are learning that we do not need to say everything our brain thinks!!!  Any support and encouragement you can give at home  in these areas will be much appreciated.   Thanks!

Show and Tell – This week is Team A.  Your child can bring something to share two times during the week.

Homework Folders – Because of the chapter reviews for Social Science and Math, I will not be putting any skill sheets in the Homework Folder this week.  The only item in the folder will be their Reading Log. The Fiction Book Project is due September 27th.We have some eager beavers who have already completed their project and turned it in!!!!  Way to go!

imagesField Trip – We will be going to Single Palm Pumpkins on Thursday, Oct. If you want to pick a pumpkin to take home, the cost will be $5.00

Conferences –   Thank you for confirming your conference appointment time by sending back the notice in the work envelope.. If the scheduled time does not work out for you, please call Mrs. Roberts at  (299-1695  ext 103)  to reschedule. Conference week is September 23- 27.  School is dismissed at 12:00 P.M. each day that week. I look forward to sharing with you.

Class T-Shirts – Each child has a class t-shirt now.!  We will be wearing them on our field trips and on Spirit Fridays. For every child who wears spirit wear, we get a point.  Last week we earned 29/30 pts.  The class who has the greatest percentage of kids wearing their shirt will get to have the Eagle mascot in their classroom for a month.  Goooo Tally’s Treasures!!!!

Boxtops For Education – This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive, we will be having a class contest. The class bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize.” We will post class totals monthly in the Office window and on our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com. Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s/teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops, to your teacher or school office. You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com. Thank you for your support.

Dear Families,

Happy Monday!!!!  We are ready to rock and roll in Room 524.  At the end of this week we will have been in school for one month.  It hardly seems possible.  The children are progressing nicely.

Character Building -We are working hard on first time obedience in our classroom. This has been a real struggle for many in our midst. Thanks!

class-picture-day-colorPicture Day – Tuesday, September 10th is Picture Day.  The flyer went home last Tuesday.  Just a reminder to mark the picture background that you want for your child. If you don’t mark it, the photographer will just choose one.

images booksLanguage Arts –Reading groups are going well. We are discussing the setting, main idea and supporting details of the stories we read.  Journal writing is  a free write and some are thinking they have the option of writing or not.  Most certainly, that is NOT the case.  It would be helpful if you talked about some ideas to write about on the way to school.  After a weekend we write about what they did on Sat and Sun. There is also a list of topics to write about on the inside of the front cover of their journal. Daily journal writing is new to many. Book ReportThe children brought home the requirements for the first book report in their homework folder on Friday, Aug. 30th.It is due Sept. 27th. Hopefully, it will be a chapter book with 50-100 pgs., however, some can handle larger books than that. If you are uncertain what the appropriate requirement should be for your child, I will be happy to help with that.

Writing –   We  are continuing on writing a Friendly Letter, remembering all the elements of a proper sentence.

images-1Math –  We are working on the foundations of regrouping.  This is very challenging for many. The work in the Friday Homework Folder will be reviewing this skill.  Many are trying to get into the Math Club . Keep faithful in Math Drills at home.  We have some very competitive spirits in here.  Go Tally’s Treasures!!!!

Bible – We will be continuing with Abraham and Lot and what it means to walk by faith and trust God completely!!!

Social Science – We are continuing our study of the  Land Around Us.

applemth3Science – We will continue studying  living and non-living things with a  focus on Apples. We will make a theme book learning how an apple develops and grows, as well as learning all the things you can do with an apple. We culminate our unit at the end of the month by making applesauce and enjoying other apple treats and activities.  Such fun!

Conferences – A notice regarding your child’s conference time was in the work envelope on Tuesday, Sept.3rd.  Siblings will be scheduled on the same day.  Please sign and return by Monday, Sept. 16th.  If the scheduled time does not work out for you, please call Kerry Robert’s office @ 299- 1695 to reschedule.  Conference week is Sept. 23-27.  School is dismissed at 12:00 PM each day that week.

Show and Tell – Show and Tell is for Team B.  Your child can bring two times during the week.

Homework -Many children are not finishing their work at school because of playing around. This is a skill that you hope is learned in first grade, but for some, that is not always the case . Any encouragement you can give your child in this area would be very much appreciated. Please be sure when your child does work at home that you check it to make sure it is correct.  I am still getting a LOT of papers with wrong answers and skipped problems.  Also, please be sure to put a name on your paper.  Thanks!!!

you-rock-heartthFundraiserAll orders for our fundraiser are due on Monday, Sept. 9th.  Thanks for all your hard work in making this a great fundraiser.  Our class sold LOTS!!! When it is all counted we will find out just how well we did!!!  We are truly grateful for all your efforts.

Boxtops -This year we will again be participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser. Each Box Top collected is worth cash for our school. As an incentive we will be having a class contest. The class  bringing in the most Box Tops at the end of this promotion will receive a “prize”. We will post class totals monthly in our Campus News located on our website: fresnochristian.com.  Please hand in your trimmed Box Tops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, labeled with your child’s teacher’s name and the amount of Box Tops to your teacher. You can find a list of Box Tops online at: www.boxtops4education.com

grandparentsGrandparent’s Day – Friday, September 13th is Grandparent’s Day. Mrs. Tally September 3,2013

Dear Families,

Welcome September!!!! I trust you had a wonderful and relaxing Labor Day weekend spending time with those you love.  Now we are ready to jump back in the saddle in Room 524!!! It has been quite a ride these first few weeks. It has challenging for some, but the children are doing a good job adjusting to a new grade and accelerated expectations as well.  So much progress has already been made. Our everyday routines are becoming more automatic and familiar which begins to build confidence. Thank you to our parent helpers who have helped facilitate this growth.  I am grateful for your investment in the lives of Tally’s Treasures.

Girl_Leaving_School_clipart_imageImportant Dismissal InfoIf you have children at different grades with different dismissal times, please pick up your child that is dismissed first and then wait for your older child. Many children are lingering, waiting for their parent to pick them up when the older sibling is ready. This ends up being a 20-25 min wait. If your child has permission to meet you in a different place other than the pirate ship or wait for a sibling, please send written permission with your signature and we will allow them to do this.  Many thanks for your help in this matter.  We just want to be sure our younger students are safe and secure.

books with appleLanguage Arts – Reading groups are going great, as is Spelling and Writing.  Journal writing is  a free write, using inventive spelling,  and the high frequency words. I am stressing the components of a proper sentence using capital letters and punctuation with legible handwriting……. imagine that !!!!  These are all standards based skills. They are encouraged to incorporate descriptive words in their journal entries, as well as some of the new words we have been learning in vocabulary. They brought home the requirements for the first book report in their homework folder last FridayIt is due Sept. 27th. Hopefully, it will be a chapter book with 50-100 pgs., however, some can handle larger books than that. If you are uncertain what the appropriate requirement should be for your child, I will be happy to help with that.

a_pencil_waving_0521-1004-3015-2929_SMUWriting – We  began working on our Benchmarks for Quarter One.We are are working on a Friendly Letter with all the proper components.

images-1Math –  We have completed  Contract 1 and will take our first Math Test on Wed. Sept. 4th. The chapter review came home Last Wednesday and will be due on Wednesday, Sept. 4th. We will will start the next contract on Tues. which is Number Patterns to 100, which precedes regrouping. Some of the children are almost a member of the First or Second  grade Math Club, which is so exciting.  The requirements for the First Grade club are facts to 10 in addition and subtraction, completing 100 in four minutes. Requirements for the Second Grade club are facts to +18, 100 in four minutes. Please be faithful in doing a 4 minute drill at home each night. Your consistency will really help your child be successful in this skill. Let me know when you need more drills at home . My goal for them is to get to subtraction facts to 20 and for some multiplication and division.

apple_3Science – We will study living and non-living things with a  focus on Apples. We will make a theme book learning how an apple develops and grows, as well as learning all the things you can do with an apple. We culminate our unit at the end of the month by making applesauce and enjoying other apple treats and activities.  Such fun!

Bible –  Please be faithful in practicing the Bible Verse. We say it many times at school as well. We will be studying Abraham and discussing what it means to walk by faith.

Social Science – We are studying Land Around Us .

Show and Tell – Show and Tell is for Team A this week.  Your child can bring two times during the week. If they have incomplete work, they will forfeit their show and tell.

Homework – Please be sure when your child does work at home that you check it to make sure it is correct.  I am getting many papers with wrong answers and skipped problems. Many are bringing home a good deal of work from our Reading and Math time last week. There is plenty of time to complete these tasks with many parent helpers, but some are just drifting and dreaming and not staying on task. So we say in the classroom, I am not giving this homework, but the child himself is doing it because of his/her lack of responsibility.  This is a work ethic that needs to be developed sooner, rather than later.  Any support from home that you can give will be appreciated.  Thanks!!!

049c0605pmGrandparent’s Day –Grandparents’ Day is on Friday, September 13th. A shuttle service will be available  from parking lots “A” and “F”  to transport grandparents to the Peoples Courtyard. They will visit classroom from 9:50-11:40. Lunch will be provided for grandparents and students. For maps and further information, visit www.fresnochristian.com.

Mrs. Tally August 26, 2013

Dear Families,

It was great  to see everyone at Back To School Night.  It was a wonderful evening. Hopefully, it gave you a  greater understanding as to the functioning and routines of the classroom. It has been an adjustment, but they are all making a smooth transition.  Our parent helpers will continue this week from 8:30-10:15 which is our Reading Language Arts Block and 10:40 – 11:35  for Math. We are still in need of  parent help during our Reading/Language Arts Block. There are many children who need a great deal of guiding, so I will be putting up another sign-up sheet and adding some more spots.  If you have already signed up, I will just transfer your name to the new paper. Thank you to those who volunteered to help us . It is so appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you.

Apple with booksVocabulary & Reading  Your child has the first vocabulary words that go along with our first reading experiences. He/she should spend some time each day on these, however, some children will need more time and others less, depending on how easily the  words go into long term memory.  You will soon be able to tell what your child needs. These should be recognized quickly, even though some of them can be sounded out. Spelling of the words is not required. We began our weekly vocabulary units this week which focus on the meaning of the word and it’s part of speech. Some of these words are familiar to them, however, many are not. There will be a new set of words each week. We discuss these words during our carpet time.

Word Builders–  Some have started on these and they are doing a wonderful job.  Mrs. King will hear your child blend every day if they didn’t finish the word builder packets last year. They will NOT be writing them or doing the work on the back.  You received the new packet at Back To School night, however many are still on the word builders from 1st grade.  We will start the new set after completing last year’s word builder skills.

apple_and_slateboardMath – We will complete Chapter 1 this week.  The chapter review will come home on Wed Aug. 28th, and will be due on Wed.  Sept. 4th. Our test will be on Wednesday as well . We will begin Chapter 2 on Wednesday which will be Number Patterns to 1000. Math drills came home in the envelope last week. Please do a 4 minute drill each night.  Just let me know when you need more drills at home.  The children are very excited about the Math Club and are anxious to become a member.  Requirements for first grade club are addition and subtraction facts to 10, Second Grade is addition to 18  and hopefully subtraction to 18.

noahs-arkBible– This week we focus on Noah. We will be discussing what it means to trust and obey God even when we don’t understand what the plan is.  We will talk about what it means to walk by faith and not by sight. Noah was a great example of that even in the midst of ridicule from the naysayers.

Social Science –  We will start the first chapter in our book entitled “Families Now and Long Ago.”

Work Envelopes – Completed work is sent home on Mondays.  Unfinished daily work will also come home  to be completed  and returned to school by Friday..  If this is often, you know your child is not using his/her time wisely. There are many who just sit and do nothing, unless prodded. They do get reminded to focus and begin working, but are unable to see the task through to completion. This is an important skill that we will continue working on.  Envelopes are due by Friday, but can be returned any day during the week. When your child has any homework to finish up at home, PLEASE take a look at it when completed and have your child fix any mistakes before you return it.

school_bagHomework Folders –  Homework folders are due every Friday. They will go home with new work each Friday as well.In this Friday’s homework folder will be the first Book Report project, The genre will be fiction.Th rubric will tell them the requirements for this project. With the rubric, there is no guessing as to the grade or number of points earned.  The due date for this project is September 27th.

grandparents_lunch-435-110-110-80Grandparent’s DayGrandparents’ Day is on Friday, September 13th. A shuttle service will be available  from parking lots “A” and “F”  to transport grandparents to the Peoples Courtyard. They will visit classroom from 9:50-11:40. Lunch will be provided for grandparents and students. For maps and further information, visit www.fresnochristian.com.

Show and Tell–  Team B has Show and Tell this week.Your child can bring it twice during the week.

Fall Fundraiser – Our fall fundraiser kicked off on August  16th and will  conclude on September 5th.  There are variety of items for sale and  there are some great prizes so sell, sell, sell. All the profit will benefit your children and programs at FCS. Our goal is that each child would sell $75 worth of items. I think Tally’s Treasures can achieve that goal!!!!! They are enjoying their prizes each day.  Many have lanyards with frogs on them already.

Mrs. Tally August 19, 2013

Our theme for this year is WE ARE ONE: Growing in Christ….Ephesians 4:15-16

Dear Families,

Welcome Monday!!! I trust you had a wonderful weekend enjoying family and friends. We had a great first week of school!!!! I have finished all of my initial assessments in Reading, Math, Writing and Spelling. HALLELUJAH FROM THE HEAVENS!!! We are now ready to begin meeting and exceeding our second grade standards, and delving into curriculum. Also, as a reminder, please send a water bottle with your child each day during this hot weather. They are roasting when they come in from each recess!!

Monday Morning Worship -Grades 1-6 will begin each Monday morning worshiping together in the North Lobby Chapel from 8:00-8:30 AM.  Parents, you are welcome to come and join us as well!

cat-sleeping-on-stack-of-books-thumbVocabulary& Reading – Monday, some children will be bringing home vocabulary words used in some of our initial reading experiences.  Although some of these are decodable, (you can sound them out) the goal right now is to recognize them visually and know them quickly.  Please work on them in the order in which they are presented.  You can make flash cards with them as well.  If you want more than one set,  so you can cut them apart and make sentences with them, let me know and I will be happy to send home another copy.   Also, your child is bringing home his/her red, blue or brown reading book. This book goes with the vocabulary words. Reading becomes more fluent when vocabulary is connected to text.  It is an excellent way to build confidence and excitement quickly.   In the beginning, I will use the Anthology book along side our Houghton Mifflin leveled readers, which at this point are more phonetic. However, all of my assessments will be with Houghton Mifflin. You may keep this book at home until I send a note that says to return it, which will not be for many weeks.  We will have weekly vocabulary and reading assignments in these Anthology books.

Work Envelopes –  Coming home on Monday will be a work envelope with your child’s work from the previous week.  Please sign the envelope and return it by Friday. You do not need to return the work, unless a paper says to finish and return. If you see quite a few finish and return papers, you will know your child is not using his time wisely, as there is PLENTY of time to complete work. We have several who like to drift and dream, thus, not completing tasks. Math Drills will be included in this week’s envelope. You do not need to return them. Your child should do a 4 minute drill each night.  If you are faithful, he/she will learn the facts much quicker, which makes work in the contract much easier. Let me know when you need more at home.

Homework  Homework folders will come home each Friday and will be due the following Friday. The first one came home on August 16th. This will give a weekend for those who have a very busy work week. There will be skill sheets of some kind and a Reading Log which will be  filled out and returned every week. The requirement will be 100 minutes a week. Book reports will start in September and there will be one “Book Project” a month.  You will hear more about this at “Back To School Night”

apple_and_slateboardMath Review & Tests– These will come home periodically as we complete a unit.  It will have a due date on it and a test date, which is always the same day as the due date for the chapter review.  Your child can return the review any time, however, it is helpful to use it as a study guide.  It will mirror the test perfectly.

Spelling– We will begin Lesson 1.  The words for August came home on the first day of school.  If you misplace them,  you can go online and find them in our classroom newsletters. Our spelling words for each week will always be online.  We will have a practice test on Wednesday and the final test on Friday .Our first test will be August 23rd. Dictation sentences will be included for each test. These are sentences I give using our spelling words and high frequency words. The children do not know the sentences before the test so it is not something they will study.

Bible–  We will finish our unit on Creation this week. Most of the kids did a great job writing their Bible Verse on Friday. It would be helpful if your child could practice writing it at least once at home before the test each week.

Writing – We  will begin learning how to write a Friendly Letter this week.  This is the category to be assessed  in our first writing benchmarks in October.

back_to_schoolBack To School Night:  Please save Tuesday, August 20th for our Curriculum Night at school.  It will begin at 7:00 PM.  This is not a night for the kids…..they would be bored to death!!!  I look forward to seeing you. Please meet in the FCS gym at 7:00 PM and after introductions and greetings from administration we will head over to our classroom.

Book Orders – Book and software orders will  be in the Monday work envelope. The final day to order online is Friday, August 23rd. However, I  will not finalize the order until Monday, August 26th. Scholastic publishes excellent books and software for children at a moderate price.  Please do not feel obligated to purchase. All of the book orders will be online each month and you are not limited to the 2nd gr books.  Feel free to browse the other brochures as well.  Our classroom code will be with the book order.  In case you misplace it, the code is JAZNG. Ordering online is very easy and payment is secure.

Parent Helpers – We will begin this week with our parent helpers.  We look forward to you helping in our classroom.  If this week doesn’t work for you, next week is fine also.

Milk and Juice Cards – Milk and Juice will be offered for K-6 students. Milk and juice are 40¢ each. You may purchase a milk and juice card for $8.00 each. Each card is good for 20 drinks. These are available in the elementary office. You will be notified when it is time to purchase a new one. This is offered as a convenience to you and is not mandatory.

Show and Tell – This week will be team A. Your child can bring two times during the week.

fundraiser_apple-426-650-500-80Fall Fundraiser – Our fall fundraiser kicked off on August  15th and will  conclude on September 9th. There are variety of items for sale and  there are some great prizes so sell, sell, sell. All the profit will benefit your children and programs at FCS. Our goal is that each child would sell $75 worth of items. I think Tally’s Treasures can achieve that goal!!!!! Also, the class who sells the most VIP cards will earn a reward for their teacher……a gift card to Tahoe Joe’s or Olive Garden!!!! That would be awesome! We can do this!!!!

welcome

Dear Families,

WELCOME BACK -I am delighted to have your child in my class this year and we are looking forward  to a wonderful  second  grade year together.  Newsletters will be posted online every Monday. You will be informed of specific class activities, areas of curriculum study and the list of Spelling words and Bible Verse for that week.  On the first Monday of each month, all the Spelling words and Bible Verses for that month will come home printed up on a theme paper.  This way you will have all the month’s work for Spelling and Bible Verses at a glance and available. This allows those students who need extra time to have them in advance. I am excited to begin our journey together in second grade.  TALLYS TREASURES ROCK!!!!!

schools_onPlease note a few items of importance to you and your second grader.

Snacks: Snacks may be eaten during the morning recess.  Fruit, veggies, crackers, cheese, chips, yogurt, raisins and fruit snacks are some suggestions.  We will save our dessert foods for lunch.  Because of various children’s food allergies, we are not allowed to share or trade food.

. School Box: Please send a pencil box that is approximately 9 x 6 x 3 inches to hold pencils, crayons, glue sticks, erasers and scissors. Larger boxes will not fit in our cubbies because of our big books and other classroom supplies.

Backpacks: Please send a full sized backpack with your child every day.  It can have wheels if so desired, as we keep them behind our chairs.

Dry Erase Boards: We do a lot of word work, phonic sounds and mental math on our boards,  which the children keep in their cubbies. Please send a white sock to be used as an eraser.  We then store our pens in our socks so we don’t lose them.  Imagine that,  second  graders losing something!!!!

Dress Code – There have been some changes in the dress code.  Please refer to the student handbook to familiarize yourself with these changes.  Teachers have been asked to check daily for those who are not adhering to the current dress code.

beeberShow and Tell: We will begin show and tell the first week of school. Everyone can share one time during the first week of school. Beginning the second week of school, each student will have the opportunity to share every other week.  Anything that is meaningful to your child is acceptable.  Be creative!!!  Team A will share the week of Aug 19-22 and Team B will share the week of Aug.26 – Aug. 30.

Classroom Behavioral Expectations: In order for our classroom to run smoothly we will be discussing the rules that we need to follow in order for that to be accomplished.  The children will be brainstorming and role-playing to create our rules.  We will be discussing self-control, respecting rights and property of others, listening without interrupting, cooperating with others, first time obedience and demonstrating positive attitudes and effort. We will be making classroom Care Agreements which will be posted in our classroom.

birthday1-thumb Birthdays: Children will be honored individually on their birthdays.  Each child will have his/her own day to celebrate.  You may bring a treat and drink if you choose. Your child and you may choose and there are no restrictions, whatever is a favorite to your child.  We usually do our celebrations at 2:20 PM.  If it is in the warmer weather, we go out to the picnic tables and in the cooler weather we celebrate inside.  Just let me know a few days ahead of time if you want to celebrate at school.  It certainly is not mandatory, however, the children really do enjoy celebrating with their friends.  If your child has a summer birthday, he/she will not be forgotten.  We will find a day for them.  It can be on their half birthday or any day that works for you.

Fire Drills: We will be having emergency fire drills monthly and we will be practicing several times during the first few weeks of school.  You may want to reinforce and discuss the need for these with your child at home as well.

gby002 Classroom Helpers: Sign-ups for morning classroom helpers will be on our outside door.  Please stop by to choose a day you are available to assist.  Helpers are used during Language Arts Block Monday-Thursday  from 8:30 -10:15 and in Math from  10:40 – 11:30.  No parent helpers are used on Fridays. There may be some more days that I will need parent help in the afternoons for writing, but at this point I do not know yet which day/days that will be.

P.E. HelpersWe are blessed to have Mrs. Whipple for P.E. once a week. Since we have a longer day, there is time in our schedule for another P.E. time.  I would love it if we could get 4 dads to assist with this second P.E. class, so it would mean a time commitment of once a month. The day that is open for us is  Tuesdays at 2:00 PM.  I will have a sign up on our door if you can help with this.

images books Book Orders: Book and software orders are sent home monthly.  Scholastic publishes excellent books and software for children at a moderate price.  Please do not feel obligated to purchase. Our code for purchasing is the same as last year and will be on the first order form that is sent home.  You are not restricted to our grade level, but have access to all the books Scholastic sells.

images back to schoolBack To School Night:  Please save August 20th for our Curriculum Night at school.  It will begin at 7:00 PM.  This is not a night for the kids…..they would be bored to death!!!  I look forward to seeing you.
